Newbie fan here - is it bad?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's bad, but it's bad in such a narmy way it actually becomes enjoyable.

It's cracky, has a few tidbits of extremely dubious supplemental canon that most fans ignore, and is oddly... un-Doctor-Who-ish? The producers were trying to revive it for an American audience, so things got a bit weird. On the plus side, though, Paul McGann is a fantastic Doctor and I like Grace, the companion. It's best taken with many, many grains of salt (and perhaps some lime and tequila, if that's your style), but its reputation as a disgrace to the Doctor Who canon is seriously overblown.

I recommend watching it, and then if you find you like McGann, he's also done a crapton of Eighth Doctor audio plays produced by Big Finish. And those are made of awesomesauce with an amazeballs cherry on top--I can't recommend them enough.

AYRT

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I've been trying to figure out which DVDs to by to check out the other Doctors so the movie on my list but this secret made me nervious.

What's with the half-human comments others are making? Just something the producers decided to thrown in randomly when they did their movie? that's baffling to me even having only watched the new series so far.

Do the audio plays try to resolve any of the discrepancies?

Newbie fan here - is it bad?

It's definitely not the best. Too American. And I say this as an American.

They tried hard, but they just... missed it, somehow.

I liked it! Actually one of the things I really liked about it was that the Master got to have a companion for a change. There's something fun about bad guys having sidekicks. I liked Simm!master and Lucy for the same reason.

Oops. I'm a bad Whovian who hasn't gotten around to seeing the TV movie yet, but I really want to! I loved Paul McGann on Luther so I'm eager to see his Doctor.

I actually liked the TV movie, apart from the last 15 minutes or so and Roberts!Master. I don't think it was good or anything, but I liked it. I mean, it had Puccini on the soundtrack. And Eight speeding through downtown LA on a motorcycle in a Wild Bill Hickock costume. So judge away.

It's fun and I don't think deserves half the hate it gets. I love the idea of the Doctor being half-human.

Except for the half-human part, I liked it. And I don't care who knows it. :-)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
You've been around DW fandom for longer than most. What matters to Classic fandom now (AFAIK) is that you're respectful enough to the show to give several eras a try. I get the impression that you have, so I doubt you'll have much of a problem.

Personally, I started in ~2007 with the 2005 series, then went back a couple years later to watch the older series. Five is my Doctor now. It sometimes takes me a few minutes to convince people who've been in fandom since before I was born that I know what I'm talking about, but once I've proven myself I've never had a problem.

Really, so long as you don't go around saying that you believe the Doctor is half human, or that the Master being American was a good idea, or that you love Eight but don't know what Big Finish is, I don't think liking the movie is such a bad thing.

tl;dr: Classic Who fandom is pretty cool, so long as you're nice to them. It's New Who fandom that's wanky and awful sometimes (but, amazing other times).

Classic Who fandom is pretty cool, so long as you're nice to them.

*sporfle*

You are really lucky to be in whatever Classic Who fandom circles you are in to give you that impression.

The worst of the Classic Who fans can be the most childish, rigid, stuck-up, stuffy, inflexible, whiny, negative, vicious, dismissive, egotistical, snobbish, rude, derogatory, ultra-purist, puritan, allergic-to-emotions, allergic-to-change, misogynistic, homophobic, closed-minded, leave-it-to-beaver-idolizing, nasty, crude, hate-filled snot-nosed brats I have ever come across in my life.

The worst of the New Who fans are just wanky, immature, ignorant, and character-bash too much, too quickly, based too much on shipping. Their awfulness has never, EVER risen to the suffocating disgustingness of Old Who fans in my experience.

/age-appropriate Old Who fan here.

I don't think it's great, but then it's not like the rest of Doctor Who (much as I love it) is always perfect either. And the Eighth Doctor / Paul McGann is lovely.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Nowadays seniority is what is most important. You would one-up any fans that came into Doctor Who through the new series, but the older fans would still look down on you.
vongroovy: ([doctor who] never forget your first)

[personal profile] vongroovy 2013-02-01 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have such a soft spot for that movie. Yeah, it's awful, but it's enjoyably awful. And Eight is amazing, maaaybe my favourite. I grew up watching a lot of Who, but I probably would have just left it as something I enjoyed as a kid if I hadn't got obsessed with it again because of that movie.

If someone actually cares how someone else got into the fandom, it's really not worth it worrying about their opinion. What does it matter if someone has been watching since the beginning or if they started with Eleven? Or anywhere in between? It's all just circumstance. If my uncle hadn't been into it, I never would have watched the show as a kid, and if I hadn't watched the show as a kid, I wouldn't have watched the movie and got back into the show, and if I hadn't got back into it, I don't know if I'd be watching it now. No one can control how or when they fall into a fandom, and I've never understood people who act like it's important. What a ridiculous thing to be elitist about.

The movie was my intro into DW even WITH a London-born father who was raised on Classic Who, and I don't regret it.

I love Eight (I love Paul McGann), I love the movie, I love him in the audioplays, I love Four, I love Romana, I love NuWho, I love everything, even if I don't like everything (or everyone).

Anyone who judges you for coming into fandom via what was an intentional attempt to revive DW and bring it across the pond, is ridiculous, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I love the movie in it's own, weird little way. It starts off pretty weak, but then you get into it and accept that it's a different everything, and then you just can't help but hug it and go "Shhhh it's okay. It's okay. I love you just the way you are."

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think my all time favorite moment in Who might be from the tv movie - the bit where he gets the cop to let them pass by threatening to shoot *himself*

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've only seen a few Who's (perhaps 3 different Doctors) and I've always liked this one the best.

When I was a kid I loved the TV movie because it was NEW Doctor Who. I was only around four years old when the show was cancelled so only got repeats on UK Gold, which was nice but I was sad there'd be no new ones. Didn't realise the film was so hated until I was older and got into Doctor Who fandom. So OP, I'm not going to judge. It wasn't great but at the time it was an attempt to revive the show and it got more people into it. And maybe in some way made people determined the bring the show back properly because the film had its flaws but it didn't kill off a revival entirely, obviously.

Me too, when I was 12. I have no regrets. I still like the movie as well. :-P
