I Think I Have Problems With Guilt

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2013-02-01 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I spent eight hours on campus doing classes, lab work, and meetings and then I came home and did more work and I feel guilty for being too tired to do any more.

This is my all the time, every day. I am constantly swimming in work and I feel guilty when I'm not constantly working. Also I have problems with procrastination but I am honestly unsure how bad they are when I already spend so much time working. ARGH.

Is there any way to stop feeling so guilty and lazy whenever I am forced into down time or is this just a permanent side effect of life?

I don't know if this will actually help you, but it helped me!

1. Keep track of how much you work vs. how much "down time" you have. Whenever you feel guilty, check the numbers, and remember that you're doing far more work then down time. (Also, sleeping isn't "down time" it's "necessary personal time" as it is required in order for you to function.)

2. "Schedule" your down time. Not like, to the minute, but get a little day planner, and mark out your blocks of free time.

Best of luck!

You sound like my partner's friend. She always had a full course load, plus extracurriculars that she was heavily involved in, and the only "sleep" she ended up getting was face-first in her homework :c She was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, and as you seem to be in a similar boat, I'd recommend talking to a counselor if you can. At the very least, they can probably help you manage your time so you don't feel like you're wasting it. You need some downtime. It's just as important as anything else. If you're constantly working, you'll stress yourself to the breaking point and nothing will get done.

Good luck, and I hope things get better <3

Nah, I already have been on psych meds for two years for bipolar, anxiety, and OCD (all by the spry age of twenty going on forty). I'm much better than the first half of last semester when I was crying all the time. I think I just need to work on time management. And I need to stop signing up for so many things :P

man. like. I don't really have anything to say here, except to say that I'm just kind of astounded at what it must be to be like that, & at how different that is from how I am. Like, it's honestly just kind of alien to me to want to do work and to feel guilty about enjoying yourself. The only time that happens to me is when I feel like I've made a strong obligation to someone I care about & I feel like they'll yell at me and be angry and disappointed if I don't make a legitimate effort to follow through. But, yeah. I don't really have any advice for you, it's just kind of surprising to me that people can be like that.

Look on the bright side, though, it means you'll probably be much more successful than me at everything.

God, I'm lazy.

I agree with what the others said, logging your hours and scheduling breaks is probably your best bet. Seeing how much downtime you had vs. how much time you spent working will give you a better idea of whether your guilt is justified or not.

Also, if you can, take a ten minute break after every fifty minutes of studying. Think of it as a reward for 50 minutes of dedicated studying, or time spent to recharge your brain cells. :P
