Yeah, where's the interesting plot point in having someone just be good? It's kinda like how you can tell the murderer by looking for the best actor.

Because nice people who are good for no reason DO exist in real life, and it's nice to have real life actually reflected accurately in fiction. Also, genuinely altruistic are so rare nowadays that it's becoming an interesting plot point all on its own (I think the scarcity is part of the reason MCU Captain America was so popular - the concept has come full circle to actually feeling unique and fresh).

True, but a treacherous backstabber moves the plot along more quickly.

And dissipates the audience's emotional investment in the story and characters if done too frequently, making the movement of the plot a moot point since no one cares about it because they don't feel the character assassination and/or absence of likable characters was worth a quick-moving plot.

Good point.

Agreed. One of the reason I fell for MCU Cap so hard was that having a character who's a genuinely good person and lives up to the "paladin" hype without being an asshole about it has become a subversion, rather than a trope-played-straight.

Google Stan "The Man" Musial. He was one of the best baseball players of the mid-20th century and one of the nicest men ever. No, seriously, he died a couple of weeks ago, and even then, absolutely no one said anything bad about him. All of the good things he did, big and small, would fill several books. What's related to your comment is that he was overlooked for years on a national scale because he never played for the Yankees or Dodgers and he was so completely nice (though St. Louis Cardinals fans adored and still adore him); once he died, though, there was suddenly this outpouring of sentiment about how darn good and kind he was because, as you said, things are coming full circle.

Sorry for that random tangent. I just wanted to provide an example of a real-life altruistic (famous) person because they're real, but rare.
