Pretty patronising and unnecessary change to be honest.

Do they really think so little of their potential audience that they're going to alter lines, in the same language, just because someone might possibly not get the original remark.

It also reflects a rather unfortunate mindset where they think the audience won't use that as an excuse to expand their knowledge of the world around them just a tiny bit.

you have a lot more faith in the intelligence of the general American public than I do

You have a lot of misplaced faith in the motivation people will feel to expend energy on simply *watching* their TV. People will expend lots of energy if they're really, really into something, but they have to get into it first.

People are probably not going to look up a single word in a one off sentence. They're just more likely to go "what the hell did he just say?" and then move on because it's really not important to know exactly what it is.

No, they're not. If you don't care enough to look it up, then you're not going to care much that you don't get the reference.

I know the bit from DW the OP is talking about, but I never looked it up then. Didn't come up again or seem important to the story so why bother? I did go check Wikipedia just now, though. (I still don't know what a "happy slapping hoodie" is - I assume it means something like "errant youth.")

Happy slapping was an old and pretty awful fad where teenagers would film each other beating on someone and a hoodie is just another word for chav like a no good teen delinquent so you were pretty much right on there!

oh don't remind me. Teens in my country used to have a phase in which they pushed elderly people in front of subway trains for fun.
