It's a pretty small change and I don't see what the big deal is. I had never heard of a ASBO before, but had a pretty good idea what it meant in context. Plus, yea, like you said, google. What you said about accessibility makes sense though, and I don't think it hurts anything. *shrugs*
That said, I don't see the point in being angry at other people for not liking the change. (Especially years later.) It's one line people...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)However, you should see the fans in countries how only get the dubbed version on TV freak out if the DVD release in their country doesn't include the original audio.
So, yeah. Americanising the language for an American might be comparable to dubs, but people are also freaking out about dubs. What made you think they wouldn't about an American dub?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)I agree that the DVDs should have both the dubbed and the original audio for those that want it, but not everyone finds dubs annoying. For some of us they're the only way we can enjoy the shows. (Subs aren't good for people with visual impairments, slow readers, people who like to be able to do chores while watching TV ect.)

Do they really think so little of their potential audience that they're going to alter lines, in the same language, just because someone might possibly not get the original remark.
It also reflects a rather unfortunate mindset where they think the audience won't use that as an excuse to expand their knowledge of the world around them just a tiny bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)People are probably not going to look up a single word in a one off sentence. They're just more likely to go "what the hell did he just say?" and then move on because it's really not important to know exactly what it is.

Sherlock isn't a show for children, where you need to keep things simple - letting the audience figure out cultural references from context isn't a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)Huh. I had no idea they called in British actors to dub over lines for American airings.
The only thing I can remember it being done for is Shrek but that makes more sense to me because it's animated. Dubbing over a live-action show (unless it's for a completely different language) just sounds funny.

It's things like this that make me wish someone would do a write-up cataloging Dumbest Wanks Ever for posterity so people can laugh at it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)But other words I would have been clueless, so it makes a lot of sense they changed it.

I know it happens fairly regularly in books (Harry Potter is an infamous example, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also comes to mind immediately*), but not TV.
* I'm pretty sure even the British version has been changed to replace the pre-decimal currency with the new versions.

It really doesn't matter. They both have their good points. ASBO is more realistic and accurate. Community Service is instantly understandable to the chosen audience. Its not at all unusual for a director to sacrifice accuracy if it makes the difference between the audience getting the joke or not.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-06 02:14 am (UTC)(link)I didn't know what that line meant, but it could've been worked from the context or looked up. And it's not like it actually mattered. If it was something important to the plot, I would support the change because it's not a good idea to have your audience get lost, have to pause the show, google the answer and continue. As it was, it just seems condescending to the non-Brits who aren't too stupid/lazy and/or arrogant to look it up, and pandering to the ones who are.
