There was wank about this? ...Alrighty.

It's a pretty small change and I don't see what the big deal is. I had never heard of a ASBO before, but had a pretty good idea what it meant in context. Plus, yea, like you said, google. What you said about accessibility makes sense though, and I don't think it hurts anything. *shrugs*

That said, I don't see the point in being angry at other people for not liking the change. (Especially years later.) It's one line people...

And now I finally know what an ASBO is. Thanks, OP.

I just looked up ASBO (I've only watched about half of the official Study in Pink) and I've got to say, it looks like a really, really stupid charge.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean "charge" or "change"? Whichever, in fact that was the writers trying to be witty, not accurate. You wouldn't get an ASBO for a single act of vandalism - more like a Police caution (although you would have to admit to having done it).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
as long as the original audio is also available to these fans, everything is alright, you're right.

However, you should see the fans in countries how only get the dubbed version on TV freak out if the DVD release in their country doesn't include the original audio.

So, yeah. Americanising the language for an American might be comparable to dubs, but people are also freaking out about dubs. What made you think they wouldn't about an American dub?

I would be so pissed if any movie or tv series that was dubbed to my language and I bought the DVD and I didn't get the original sound. Dubbed content is annoying.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Dubbed content is annoying to you.

I agree that the DVDs should have both the dubbed and the original audio for those that want it, but not everyone finds dubs annoying. For some of us they're the only way we can enjoy the shows. (Subs aren't good for people with visual impairments, slow readers, people who like to be able to do chores while watching TV ect.)

Pretty patronising and unnecessary change to be honest.

Do they really think so little of their potential audience that they're going to alter lines, in the same language, just because someone might possibly not get the original remark.

It also reflects a rather unfortunate mindset where they think the audience won't use that as an excuse to expand their knowledge of the world around them just a tiny bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
you have a lot more faith in the intelligence of the general American public than I do

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a lot of misplaced faith in the motivation people will feel to expend energy on simply *watching* their TV. People will expend lots of energy if they're really, really into something, but they have to get into it first.

People are probably not going to look up a single word in a one off sentence. They're just more likely to go "what the hell did he just say?" and then move on because it's really not important to know exactly what it is.

I know the bit from DW the OP is talking about, but I never looked it up then. Didn't come up again or seem important to the story so why bother? I did go check Wikipedia just now, though. (I still don't know what a "happy slapping hoodie" is - I assume it means something like "errant youth.")

It's a British series, written by Brits, set in Britain, starring a bunch of British actors, based on a famous British character. You have to expect it to be just a little bit British.

Sherlock isn't a show for children, where you need to keep things simple - letting the audience figure out cultural references from context isn't a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
...Really?

Huh. I had no idea they called in British actors to dub over lines for American airings.

The only thing I can remember it being done for is Shrek but that makes more sense to me because it's animated. Dubbing over a live-action show (unless it's for a completely different language) just sounds funny.

I would assume they actually reshot the scene with Martin saying 'community service', instead of 'ASBO'.

idrc about it either way, but if Hulu doesn't think the numerous references to ASBOs in Misfits need to be addressed, I think PBS would've been fine leaving one mention of it in Sherlock.

People actually wanked about this?

It's things like this that make me wish someone would do a write-up cataloging Dumbest Wanks Ever for posterity so people can laugh at it.

like i know sherlock fandom is questionable sometimes but ?????? there was real wank about this?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched Misfits.

But other words I would have been clueless, so it makes a lot of sense they changed it.

AFAIK quite a few British shows get dubs and changes for US audiences, and I don't see a problem with it. I've always kind of wished they'd do it in reverse because I'm not much of a Yankophile. I have no idea what characters are talking about at times. xD

This is the first time I can remember a TV show getting edited for cultural references, rather than time (since UK shows have several minutes fewer commercials than US and Canadian shows).

I know it happens fairly regularly in books (Harry Potter is an infamous example, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also comes to mind immediately*), but not TV.

* I'm pretty sure even the British version has been changed to replace the pre-decimal currency with the new versions.

Considering the subject of the secret - do you know what characters on US crime shows mean when they talk about things like a misdemeanor and different classes thereof? Because that seems like a rough equivalent. I can see how this would be annoying in either direction

Was there wank about this? I have no memory of it (although it's been, what, over two years now?). Usually the complaints are about the things PBS edits out.

That seems like a really petty thing to be burned about. Both the change in wording and the wank about it. I was in the fandom, but I don't remember that particular wank. I do recall a lot of gnashing of teeth that they actually cut out about 5 minutes for the American version so that it fit the time slot better.

It really doesn't matter. They both have their good points. ASBO is more realistic and accurate. Community Service is instantly understandable to the chosen audience. Its not at all unusual for a director to sacrifice accuracy if it makes the difference between the audience getting the joke or not.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-06 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'm kinda on the side of the wankers actually. Because really, it's catering to stupidity and laziness.

I didn't know what that line meant, but it could've been worked from the context or looked up. And it's not like it actually mattered. If it was something important to the plot, I would support the change because it's not a good idea to have your audience get lost, have to pause the show, google the answer and continue. As it was, it just seems condescending to the non-Brits who aren't too stupid/lazy and/or arrogant to look it up, and pandering to the ones who are.
