I mostly meant (i) why not compare each to their direct kids analogues. Because wouldn't the fact that the contrast isn't that striking actually make your point? That animation isn't inherantly less rich?

Ah, I see.

No, I mostly meant to say that characters, relationships&plot in the most blatantly children's stuff are no less interesting and sophisticated than in the mainstream fandom obsessions. So in this case sharp contrast=more graphic than mild contrast.

You also have a point; but, frankly, I wouldn't pick comicverse for comparison. It is not considered to be "for children". In fact, nowadays it's rather "for adult geeks". Then cartoon versions - I've only seen one, and it struck me as enjoyable but really silly.

I would probably choose "Howl's Moving Castle" to support your idea, although I do think that the film made book!themes somewhat simpler. [also I'm not sure if it wasn't initially written for children, tbh. Need to google]

I would make an argument for Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes vs Marvel Cinematic Universe as a pretty interesting compare-and-contrast for depth of characters, interactions and moral issues. Because there are moments when the cartoon does seem slightly more complex than the movieverse, which is fairly uncomplicated moral-wise in particular.

Howl is more complicated, because the animated film isn't really a direct adaptation of the book. They went in two different directions, with the movie going more into the state involvements and the duties of power, while the book was more personal growth and the personal responsibilities of power. Similar, but not really the same, I think.

Agreed on the Moving Castle; I've just always seen the ending of the film as somewhat too sugary. It smooths much of the tension over.

Ha, "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" was the one I watched. Fun yet mighty silly, that was my first impression. But then again, Marvel Cinematic Universe does not exactly shine with masterly plot moves either. [also Hank always annoys the hell out of me. He's worse than the Wolverine]
What, in your opinion, was more complex in the cartoon?..

I thought the ending to the movie was a bit abrupt, yes. But with the rest of the movie behind it, I didn't mind too much, really.

The A:EMH treatment of the Bruce/Hulk issue was quite a bit darker and more complicated than the MCU one, is the main example that's coming to mind. I mean, the cartoon is most definitely fun and silly a lot of the time, but there are flashes of darkness in it.

Oh yes, forgot about this one. You're right. (although in the movie he did want to blow his brains out... but the ending he got was happier than that of the animated!Bruce)

This is interesting to me because I have a frame of reference for the ones dreemyweird chose but if comparing the Avengers movie to its kids analogues I wouldn't have gotten anything out of it. I'm not a big Avengers fan but a lot of my friends are and the thing they have most in common is that they don't care about/for anything but the movie and maybe the comics. Of my friends who are like me and not into the Avengers at all, we've all seen the movie and most if not all of the individual movies but our knowledge of the Avengers 'verse stops there.
