But, look... Haruka and Michiru don't know they're in a show called "Sailor Moon", and that Usagi is always going to be right and she's going to save the day even by doing something completely reckless and naive. Haruka and Michiru are doing the most responsible and sensible things, if they lived in the real world and they didn't know Usagi and the way that reality bends her way.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)The only specific example that's coming to mind was the SGA episode with the volcano planet, what was it, Inferno. Where Caldwell is voting for a reliable evacuation method that will not have time to get everyone off, but will reliably get a significant portion of them off, and Sheppard is advocating a hail mary plan involving a broken Ancient ship that will get everyone off if it works, but will also move them out of transport range for the first plan, meaning that either they get everyone off at once or even the ones that the last dregs of Caldwell's plan would have saved will die.
I mean, it worked, because McKay was repairing the ship and because Sheppard has a truly ungodly amount of luck, but it literally only worked at the last possible second, and people were yelling at Caldwell for not wanting to save everyone, and then later Trinity blew up in everyone's faces and McKay can't make miracles happen, and I'm sort of going: yes, well, I told you lot that back with Inferno.
The concepts of triage and taking precautions and the acceptance that you might not be able to save everyone do NOT make someone evil, is my point. If I was ever in a real crisis, those characters would be the ones I'd want making decisions. Risk-taking is fine, but after we've gotten a relatively reliable system in place, yes?

If he was in a more realistic series like Gundam, he'd be a tragic hero, but he was stuck in a much sillier series. Personally I think it's rather cruel to throw a character under the bus just because they don't KNOW that sensible logic does not apply here, silly mortal.
