(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)I'm assuming money, power, peer respect, influence, et cetera all count, as they're obvious external gains. But there are characters who follow self-imposed honor codes of whatever type, like someone mentioned above. There are characters who do good because they feel it's their responsibility to do so, like superheroes, as well. Then there are characters that follow the "Good Feels Good" trope and do good because it makes them happy to see others happy.
Does those count as gains, and is a character like that therefore not good to you? Or do you not think any of those examples are realistic?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-04 06:10 am (UTC)(link)Person A is given a dollar, and spends it on a chocolate bar, because eating chocolate makes that person happy.
Person B is given a dollar, and banks it, because thinking about what they might do with that dollar on a rainy day makes that person happy.
Person C is given a dollar, and donates it to charity, because thinking about who that might help makes that person happy.
I'm not saying how much good you do isn't a measure of the kind of person you are, but if you do it with a glow in your heart, are you a 'better' person? A 'better' altruist? Or just wired differently?
