Aside from the fact that quite a few are really well written these days, a lot of the time the people behind the cartoons have realised that Adults watch cartoons with their kids, so they insert stuff into them to appeal to older audiences as well.

In particular Pop Culture references.

Friendship is Magic for example, has references to Doctor Who, Star Trek, Terminator, James Bond, Mad Men, Big Lebowski and more.

Phineas and Ferb is another with a lot of pop culture references.

Why -wouldn't- you like them! :D

I think Phineas and Ferb is also a fun, sweet, upbeat show with secret agentry, loads of fun female characters (I do love seeing Wacky Characters that are also girls), and a really touching take on step-families. Considering that me and my sibs have never been that close to our step-siblings, it's kinda nice to see that Phineas and Ferb regard each other as real brothers, not as "sorta" brothers. And even Candace does as well.
