(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)I've been confused about this too, especially when it's a show I know is exclusively for really young kids. When I was in high school, there were a group of kids who thought it was cool to love Winnie the Pooh. I didn't get it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)For some people its the promise of simplicity that is so alluring. people who are in children's show fandoms often enjoy their fair share of mature entertainment, from m rated video games, to the latest bloody HBO miniseries or epic fantasy tale. Sometimes though, they want to see something where the audience doesn't have to worry about the problems that missteps in using mature themes causes. Children's show fandoms don't have to worry about a Korra rape scene done in poor taste, Optimus Prime isn't going to fight decepticons in a meth lab, Spongebob won't spend a whole season kicking his drinking habit, Elmer Fudd will never actually kill bugs bunny, the scooby gang will never be chopped up by a crazed serial killer.
Another reason children's show tend to develop fandom is their world building. Adult shows are often built off the real world or a very small set if archetypes that get used over and over again. Children's shows tend to have more freedom to throw these archetypes out the window, mostly because they are animated, so they share that advantage with anime in general. Geeks love interesting world buiding, and to use a couple of examples for this in more mature properties; a computer game called arcanum came out in 2001, and one of the major reasons fans gave for liking it is because it got rid of the tired fantasy conventions of having humans, elves, and dwarves sitting in a perpetually medieval fantasy setting. The fallout series is another property that builds off the strength of the novelty of its setting. In the same vein I see so many geeks flip out over the setting for things like Avatar and MLP because the world they are based in is ripe for the sort of thing people build pen and paper role playing campaigns around.
There's also the nostalgia factor and many people enjoy going back to the things they enjoyed as kids or re-experiencing old properties in a new light.
In the end, there's a lot of reasons I missed, but it still all ultimately boils down to: because it's entertaining, and really should there need to be any more reason than that.

Long explanation: Same reason to why people watch reality television or documentaries or comedy shows, because they enjoy it and why on earth do you need to understand why someone else likes something that by all accounts don't hurt anyone?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)Some cartoons are genuinely well-written, and I can appreciate that at any age. And sometimes, after a stressful day of being a responsible adult, it's really nice to watch a cartoon where there's a solution to every problem. Also, as for some specific cartoons, I love that there is just a group of girls doing stuff. Give me an adult series that consists of a mostly female cast without relationship drama and conspiracies and rivalries.
Also, I just really enjoy animation. I wish more people would, so that there wouldn't be the need to turn everything into a live action movie/series. For example, the recent superhero movies. They're certainly not bad, but I think I'd enjoy them much more if they were animated.

(Some people call grownups' adoption of kids' shows a form of the New Sincerity movement--look it up if you're curious.)

Fandom is shamelessly in love with "The Avengers", but I just can't fathom how it's richer in character dynamics and plot devices than, say, "Bazil of Baker Street".
Sadly/luckily, I'm not trolling.

Most of what I find that caters to that escapism aspect just so happens to be aimed at young audiences. I often find that those characters and stories engage me much more than Some Boring Legal Drama or Yet Another Vapid Soap Opera. If that's so wrong, then I don't want to ever be right.
