Depends on the show. When I was a kid I had stuff like Rocko's Modern Life, and a majority of the jokes on that show went over my head as a child. Then you have cartoons today like Dan Vs, and whatnot, that are very heavily adult-joke oriented.

I can see you point with shows like MLP:FiM and Fin/Ferb, though.

I happen to appreciate a show that's lighthearted and fun. If you can find me a show aimed at adults that isn't full of excessive drama, suspense, or romance, then I will be all over that shit. Until then, I'mma watch me some kids cartoons, because they neither stress me out nor piss me off.

It doesn't matter to me if the show is animated or live action. The quality of writing and acting are the most important things.

I don't really participate in cartoon fandoms but I'll watch cartoons from my childhood because eh, it's fun to forget you've got different priorities for a few moments I suppose. Will watch stuff from after my childhood only in exceptional circumstances though. For example by the time Spongebob was on I was going through that typical "everything is for babies" teenage phase but I got into watching it a few years later because my friends at house parties would get stoned and watch it - and I found it hilarious watching their reactions.

Sometimes they're good, dude. I don't know what to tell you.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what you're referring to, but not everything associated with being for kids is actually for kids, so if you're assuming they're for kids that may actually not be the case. There's also the fact that a lot of shows and books are designed to appeal to both. So maybe that's what you're seeing?

I've been confused about this too, especially when it's a show I know is exclusively for really young kids. When I was in high school, there were a group of kids who thought it was cool to love Winnie the Pooh. I didn't get it.

Just because I'm older doesn't mean my tastes have changed.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
People watch children's cartoons for mostly the same reasons they watch and enjoy shows for older audiences, because they are entertaining. It really is that easy, remember simple =/= unentertaining, and children's cartoons are still written, designed and produced by adults, also mature themes don't automatically make something better if they aren't used well.

For some people its the promise of simplicity that is so alluring. people who are in children's show fandoms often enjoy their fair share of mature entertainment, from m rated video games, to the latest bloody HBO miniseries or epic fantasy tale. Sometimes though, they want to see something where the audience doesn't have to worry about the problems that missteps in using mature themes causes. Children's show fandoms don't have to worry about a Korra rape scene done in poor taste, Optimus Prime isn't going to fight decepticons in a meth lab, Spongebob won't spend a whole season kicking his drinking habit, Elmer Fudd will never actually kill bugs bunny, the scooby gang will never be chopped up by a crazed serial killer.

Another reason children's show tend to develop fandom is their world building. Adult shows are often built off the real world or a very small set if archetypes that get used over and over again. Children's shows tend to have more freedom to throw these archetypes out the window, mostly because they are animated, so they share that advantage with anime in general. Geeks love interesting world buiding, and to use a couple of examples for this in more mature properties; a computer game called arcanum came out in 2001, and one of the major reasons fans gave for liking it is because it got rid of the tired fantasy conventions of having humans, elves, and dwarves sitting in a perpetually medieval fantasy setting. The fallout series is another property that builds off the strength of the novelty of its setting. In the same vein I see so many geeks flip out over the setting for things like Avatar and MLP because the world they are based in is ripe for the sort of thing people build pen and paper role playing campaigns around.

There's also the nostalgia factor and many people enjoy going back to the things they enjoyed as kids or re-experiencing old properties in a new light.

In the end, there's a lot of reasons I missed, but it still all ultimately boils down to: because it's entertaining, and really should there need to be any more reason than that.

I don't know about other people, but I'm face-blind, so anything live-action confuses the hell out of me, and I downright loathe "adult" animation like Family Guy. So I'm left with children's cartoons, and with nothing to compare to, it's easy enough to enjoy them.

Short explanation, because they like it.

Long explanation: Same reason to why people watch reality television or documentaries or comedy shows, because they enjoy it and why on earth do you need to understand why someone else likes something that by all accounts don't hurt anyone?

I think part of the reason why I'm still watching cartoons is that there's such a huge age difference between my little brother and me. I watched a bunch of cartoons with him. But well, not gonna lie, I like some of them myself.

Some cartoons are genuinely well-written, and I can appreciate that at any age. And sometimes, after a stressful day of being a responsible adult, it's really nice to watch a cartoon where there's a solution to every problem. Also, as for some specific cartoons, I love that there is just a group of girls doing stuff. Give me an adult series that consists of a mostly female cast without relationship drama and conspiracies and rivalries.

Also, I just really enjoy animation. I wish more people would, so that there wouldn't be the need to turn everything into a live action movie/series. For example, the recent superhero movies. They're certainly not bad, but I think I'd enjoy them much more if they were animated.

I might as well say it straight up. I really, really like lighthearted adventure shows, with a bit of action but not much violence or death. Every show I can think of that's currently airing and fits that description is a kids' show. Everything adventure-ey for adults now is all grim and depressing.

(Some people call grownups' adoption of kids' shows a form of the New Sincerity movement--look it up if you're curious.)

I honestly don't see ANY dfference between some of the children's movies/shows and things that are considered "serious".

Fandom is shamelessly in love with "The Avengers", but I just can't fathom how it's richer in character dynamics and plot devices than, say, "Bazil of Baker Street".

Sadly/luckily, I'm not trolling.

Haha, this is good timing, because I started rewatching the Yu-Gi-Oh dub today on a whim. XD I remember thinking it was a lot more hardcore when I was a little kid, but the monster designs are still awesome. I just... I love how worldbuilding in children's shows can be so fun and wild in a way that doesn't have to make any sense whatsoever. Soul stolen? CARD GAME. Personal issues? CARD GAME. Someone just hospitalized your grandfather? CARD GAME.

I like escapism in my media...stuff that's not grounded entirely in the often depressing real world. If I want the real world to depress me, I'll watch the news, thanks.

Most of what I find that caters to that escapism aspect just so happens to be aimed at young audiences. I often find that those characters and stories engage me much more than Some Boring Legal Drama or Yet Another Vapid Soap Opera. If that's so wrong, then I don't want to ever be right.

Depends on the childrens' show. There are a lot of cartoons for children that have things in them that appeal to adults (someone mentioned Rocko's Modern Life earlier which is a great example -- I loved that show as a kid but there are a lot of jokes I didn't get as a kid that I get now, and situations I appreciate more now that I'm an adult and have had to pay rent/work/etc). There's also the fact that some people like to wax nostalgic about childhood

I understand why people like to watch it on a "it's a light hearted fun show with ponies!" level, but personally, it has the same problem as reading children's books. The story may be great, but after a while the first-grade vocabulary, horrible formatting, and size 16 font cause me to fail out.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What can I say? I'm very much an adult and I love watching Spongebob and Almost Naked Animals. They're fun shows and they make me laugh, so what's wrong with that? I don't participate in the fandoms (if it even exists for the latter show), but there's nothing wrong with the people that do.

Lighten up, OP. It's really not that big a deal.
