That's a horribly cynical attitude. And also not really that accurate. It's been my experience that the people who are well adjusted and comfortable with themselves and have lived through some serious ups and downs in their lives are the ones who know and care about helping others. Altruism is about seeing the bigger picture and you have to be in a pretty good mental space to be able to do that. Those who are insane have too much on their own plate to deal with to worry about what's on other people's.

~Altruism is about seeing the bigger picture and you have to be in a pretty good mental space to be able to do that.~

Not really. Sometimes altruism is 'I'm feeling completely fucked-up either right now or in general, and I can't see any way to improve my own life, but if I can do this thing that makes somebody else's life suck less, I don't have to think about it for a little while.'

Not saying I agree with OP, and I believe there *are* well-adjusted altruists, but it doesn't have to be the case.
