~Altruism is about seeing the bigger picture and you have to be in a pretty good mental space to be able to do that.~

Not really. Sometimes altruism is 'I'm feeling completely fucked-up either right now or in general, and I can't see any way to improve my own life, but if I can do this thing that makes somebody else's life suck less, I don't have to think about it for a little while.'

Not saying I agree with OP, and I believe there *are* well-adjusted altruists, but it doesn't have to be the case.
