There's a suspension of disbelief necessary with some 1st person writings, isn't there, when you say to yourself, "Who thinks like this? No one thinks like this!" It can kill the reading entirely! (This is also true for epistolary style, if you find yourself saying, "No one writes in a diary/letter this way!")
