Why would they bother animating cats' eyes the incorrect way? The demon headlights look is much better.

OP
I no, rite?

I think it's because the wrong one looks more dramatic and scary. At least it does to me.

But I feel your pain, OP. I have little things that bug me too.

But hey, who knows? Maybe people will start doing it right.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
OP
They did the eye-shine correctly in the Hobbit with Gollum and that was pretty dang dramatic and scary.

Anatomically-speaking, you're correct. But special effects are entirely about what looks the coolest, and the headlights-of-bad-camera-angle aren't nearly as cool looking as the "incorrect" way. So, yeah, I doubt it's really going to change any time soon.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
OP
As I said to another commenter, they got the eye-shine right for Gollum in the Hobbit and that looked pretty dang cool. There's really no reason to not do it correctly.
(IIRC Blade Runner also correctly used red-eye, which is similar but not exactly the same as eye-shine, to good effect.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Anatomically-speaking, the OP is only correct in knowing that cats have a ~tapetum lucidum~ and shows no understanding of the environment needed for it to show up.

Which is way more aggravating than movies focussing on FFX

OP
What, tapetum lucidum?

[personal profile] making_excuses 2013-02-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is one of the instances where design comes before reality.

Just like Grizzly bears don't really roar and gun silencers don't work as well in RL as in movies. And an hundred other examples where entertainment "lies" to you, because it sounds/looks cooler.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
yup, it's a self-reinforcement thing by now

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP
Yeah but there are movies out there that do things correctly and it works very well, so whenever I see a movie NOT do something correctly, I automatically assume it's because they're being lazy. Which isn't a fair assumption to make, but that's what happens on my end.

Yeah the bear roar and gun silencer things annoy me too. Things like that and the eye-shine thing don't necessarily ruin a movie for me. They just make me irrationally angry because it would have been just as easy to do things the right way instead of the popular way.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
My sister complains every time an eagle vocalizes and makes a red-tailed hawk noise. (Read: every time an eagle vocalizes in movies or TV. The scream is a hawk. The noise actually made by eagles is more ak-ak-ak-ak-ak.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
OP
Or how 'kookaburra call' = 'South American/African jungle sounds' in so many movies. Noooooooo!

maverickz3r0: tardis sitting on grassy field with words the world i love (did you see that?)

[personal profile] maverickz3r0 2013-02-05 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
That is enough to throw me out of something. Probably because we have both eagles and red-tailed hawks around here, so if I hear that cry I automatically look for a hawk.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I loved how they did Gollum's eyes like the lower cat for a brief moment in FotR.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
OP
That's kinda what brought on my secret. There ARE movies out there that do eye-shine correctly, so it's not like this is any great secret. You just have to look at an animal at night, for goodness' sake.

This secret: proof that people can nitpick anything.

(This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if the phrase "can't please everybody" was ever valid, now is the time.)
