...have you ever met a Ianto Jones fan?

It's been 4 years for them.

Well, the show has been pretty good about dead being dead, so at least there's hope that they're saving the maybe one time they can get away with it without it becoming overdone for Rick.

(I figure every show has a certain "oh he's in fact alive/back from the dead!!!" quota. You can't overdo it.)

Ric deserved so much better than a guy who had no problem killing out of sheer pettiness.

Well, it's perfectly natural to be affected by fiction. That's often the way you can tell it's a good work: you care. That being said, truly grieving a fictional character for months isn't healthy (I won't say "normal" because that's just the median and really has no relevance). I'm not a shrink or a counselor or anything, so I can't really give you solid advice on how to deal with it, but um... maybe try and figure out on your own why it is that it affected you so much, and try and talk to someone who knows more than I do about it?

Aw, Alaric is dead? D: I stopped watching in the middle of last season and that is seriously the saddest and worst thing I've heard since I gave the show up.

I watched the finale of TVD season 3 today & I was kind of heartbroken...Damon lost his BF (srsly the best bromance on TV!), Elena & Jeremy lost the person who looked after them.
It feels kind of weird that Alaric won't be there anyomore...

OP I think it's OK if you keep perspective on it. I didn't get over Ianto Jones either. However i think the fact is that real life people we lose have very complex relationships with us. Grief is mixed with anger, regret, ambivalence, unfinished business of all sort. A fictional character, well it's like when Princess Diana died, she might as well have been fictional to most of the people who kept vigil and cried a lot and laid flowers.

I think as long as you are able to get that what's going on is sort of a pure grief that is no doubt mixed in with real life grief, even grieving things that haven't happened yet, like the future death of a loved one. It's a way of being in touch with those feelings. It's just working out what's going on that I think sometimes causes people to tell you it's unhealthy, because you have to work that out for yourself, people can't police your feelings.
