Not exactly a contemporary example, but Captain Cook from the old Doctor Who serial "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy", from Seven and Ace's run. Basically, he's a snooty old intergalactic explorer who tells long stories about his past, lies to and manipulates his enemies and everyone else around him, and travels around with a lost, troubled, violent young woman he rescued from a crappy life who has a bit of indebted hero worship for him. Yeah.

The thing that DOES separate him from Seven if that he's a completely selfish amoral douche who doesn't give a damn about anyone else's life, he treats his girl like shit and threatens to dump her whenever she argues with him and hurts her to save his own skin, and his stories are really boring.

Seven really, really, really, really, REALLY hates him. Especially the treating his girl like shit part.
