You know that thing where...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
...a fictional character meets another (sometimes one-off, sometimes recurring) character who's very similar in certain ways to the first character, except the second character is a massive dick or went down the wrong path or is a kind of dark twisted version of himself (or herself) with all the flaws exaggerated or all the good traits missing?

For some reason, I'm really fascinated by this phenomenon and want to hear about more examples of it. Can anyone recall examples of this?

You mean like Buffy and Faith? Both are keen slayers but one is evil and one is good?

ayrt

Yeah, Buffy and Faith is actually what prompted this comment! I wanna see more examples of it, but the dark version doesn't have to be that prominent or long-lasting a character.

Not quite the same thing as you describe, but I always liked Zero as the darker counterpart to Megaman X. Specifically designed to be evil, and ultimately responsible for the corruption of an entire synthetic race.

Most obvious example I can think of right now is Sherlock and Moriarity (on BBC Sherlock, I'm really not familiar enough with other versions, but I'd wager it's likely true there, too).

Though I have not read this far, and don't want to be spoiled, I hear Jacen Solo (twin brother to Jaina Solo) goes a little batshit evil in the Star Wars expanded universe.

Seems like there's something else on the tip of my tongue, but I can't quite think of what.

In the Black Cat manga you have Train and Creed. They started off as assassins together, only Train decided to stop killing and found friendship and fluffy things, whereas Creed goes steadily further off the deep end and has a big gay crush on Train

Maybe Dean and Gabriel from Supernatural? Dean even admits the similarities. They're both rather hedonistic and have the same kind of sense of duty to their families. Then there are the little things, like how they obviously have the same sense of humor, they're both averse to talking about their feelings (esp concerning their families), etc. The difference is that Dean fulfills that duty, but Gabriel doesn't out of cowardice - at least, until Dean persuades him to. And while Dean may laugh at such jokes, he wouldn't actually kill people, whether for fun or for Gabriel's twisted sense of justice. But then, Dean does kill dangerous monsters, so that might actually be another similarity.

This is why I loved Hammer of the Gods so much, hilarious portrayals of pantheons aside.

Yes, exactly! I'm not as hung up on the fact that Gabriel never had the chance to join Team Free Will as other people, but sometimes I wish it had happened because his interaction with Dean would have been gold. Their relationship would have been really interesting to watch too, particularly since Dean had shown some liking to him in Tall Tales, and Gabriel shown Dean preference in Changing Channels.

And Destiel shippers would be slightly less obnoxious since Debriel shippers would inevitably pop up too, and that'd just be icing on the cake.

Not exactly a contemporary example, but Captain Cook from the old Doctor Who serial "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy", from Seven and Ace's run. Basically, he's a snooty old intergalactic explorer who tells long stories about his past, lies to and manipulates his enemies and everyone else around him, and travels around with a lost, troubled, violent young woman he rescued from a crappy life who has a bit of indebted hero worship for him. Yeah.

The thing that DOES separate him from Seven if that he's a completely selfish amoral douche who doesn't give a damn about anyone else's life, he treats his girl like shit and threatens to dump her whenever she argues with him and hurts her to save his own skin, and his stories are really boring.

Seven really, really, really, really, REALLY hates him. Especially the treating his girl like shit part.

First of all, I read this in Stefon's voice.

There was an episode of the newest Ben 10 cartoon (Omniverse) in which Ben met a version of himself from a universe where his grandpa died before he got the Omnitrix, and so without his guidance he became fame hungry and unaware that some aliens were good guys

I've been talking a lot about Star Trek lately it seems, but in the episode Equinox of Star Trek Voyager, they run into another Starfleet crew that's been stranded and several of them have dark counterparts on board. The Janeway/Ransom captain parallels are particularly neat, and it's one of the series' stronger two-parters.

Dante and Vergil from Devil May Cry. Both half-devil identical twins with an affinity for big swords and killing things, only Vergil went down a very dark path with it and now they're dire enemies.

This COULD have happened between Yuna and Seymore from FF10, and it would have been awesome, but the writers instead decided to make Seymore a cliche anime villain instead of actually exploring how a summoner became a genocidal nihilist.

Xena and Callisto come to mind.

And done much more lightly, Kim Possible and Shego have kind of the same vibe. More so in fanfic than in the show, but it's a pretty easy parallel to draw.

oh, I suppose this is spoilers but what the hey, it's been released for ages. Mithos and Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia counts, I think.

Eliza Dushku also starred in the short-lived Tru Calling. It was really light viewing, where as a rookie city morgue worker named Tru, she finds the occasional fresh corpse will ask for help, wherein she relives the last day in order to prevent their death. She generally tries to make other things go better or smoother through her rewinds, too, like giving better advice to a neighbor or co-worker. No one but her remembers the way things went originally on "rewind days" until the character Jack shows up, who also rewinds, but decides each time to ensure the person dies through the circumstances they did initially rather than mess with fate. They clash, and it's also mentioned that Tru's parents both had the same abilities (her mom always believing they should save the person, her dad eventually(?) believing they should ensure the person's death... been a while since I've seen this.). Jack isn't above manipulating Tru's family and friends to interfere with her, and Tru's dad iirc isn't above quicker disposal of the people who died.

Skyfall. Spoilers, I guess: Bond and main villain Silva are both skillful and capable spies who have felt betrayed by M and M16 to the point of abandonment, but can't entirely cut their nearly filial ties with M. Silva decides a good ol' extensively-planned, well-armed, mercenary-fueled rampage with tons of collateral damage, whatever incidental mindgames he can manage, and the ultimate goal of killing M to a celebratory soundtrack is the way to go. Otoh, Bond opts for mere slight unsteadiness, and decides to protect M, reinstate himself in M16, and figure out how to Home Alone an abandoned country estate in a day with, essentially, two senior citizens and some dogs, since he spent his lone wolf time just chillaxing rather than amassing a huge personal fortune for vengeance.

Also: Star Trek Next Generation: androids Data and Lore, where Data uses his superhuman strength and intelligence to investigate and understand when Lore uses it to manipulate and gain power. And Battle Angel Alita (aka Gunm): Alita and her many brain copies, all with her fighting abilities and love of combat, though most unfortunately lack her empathy and drive for independence. (The few that don't feel more like alternate-but-not-necessarily-evil paths.)
kryptoncat: C-3PO and R2-D2 standing in desert; R2 is saying 'PUMP UP THE JAM' (CLEARLY MY ICONS NEED MORE ROBOTS)
