Why would you be offended by collectible figurines

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh...collectible figurines in the nature of the Django ones are no different than posters, in my opinion. There just small sculptures.

But the Black Widow one is meant to be a kind of sex object. She's not that kind of character, but apparently Marvel is still cool producing stuff that reduces her to her body. Unless we get a Thor opening up his fly, it is pretty sexist and I can see offense.

Yeah that first one is actually pretty lousy. That's officail? O.o

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I think Hot Toys is making them? It's sad, since their other collectibles are actually very nice to look at. And don't have a uniboob.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the Hoy Toy one, looks like.

http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=901888#HotToysItem

All the other ones I have are pretty good quality, though, so I'm hoping it's just bad photography. And I hope that zipper actually zips up.

Sorry, OP, I would like to sympathize with ya, but I can't. I don't get your sentiment. Does it mean that producing sexy dolls of female fictional characters is generally wrong?

And it's not even a part of her character, just some money-making semi-related thingie?

And they own the concept, after all? ...IDK.

Admittedly, the slave dolls do not affect me either. Maybe I'm heartless or do not understand the cultural context.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Some others have implied this, but it would be less of an issue, I think, if the dolls of fictional male characters were sexed up to the same extent.

Generally speaking, most problematic representations of people would not be problematic were it not for the fact that individuals of a certain gender/race/orientation are disproportionately represented that way. When there is that sort of imbalance, it usually corresponds to a prejudicial social view (in this case: women are meant to be sexually desirable first, and everything else second).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
If the only one who is getting the sexy, dolled up action figure is the girl, while all the guys on the team get the normal awesome action-y pose action figure, yes there is something wrong with that. Because it is clear implication that, as always, only the male audience is excessively catered to by giving them an overly sexualized action figure.

Now, if the company would also produce sexualized action figures of the guys, it wouldn't be so bad. But if they only default to the girl? Yeah there is something wrong with that.

The Widow figure would be so good if it wasn't sexed up. It has such lovely details, but...her boobs look odd and the whole pose is unintentionally hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm offended by how her boobs look like they have fused to each other.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
...okay. What about those of us who are buying Black Widow because we already have Hawkeye and Fury and want to make a SHIELD set? WHAT THEN?

And by that I mean I don't see her collectible as inherently problematic.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently because she's unzipping her top and thus is being reduced to a sex object rather than her badass self.

...Yeah, I'd prefer one where she was firing two pistols at 90-degree angles, because that's more of a part of her character than teh sexxay, but I also dig chicks with guns, so.

And, you know, I'd prefer one of Tony Stark in his Black Sabbath tee at his 3-D computer instead of in the armor...

What is wrong with her boobs? Why are they like that? Has Escher Girls gotten ahold of this yet?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Who are you trying to impress with your offendedness? Because otherwise this is just dumb. Fanservice and the mere existence of collectible movie figurines are not worthy or useful things to be raging at.

I mean, geez, anon, don't wreck yourself looking for reasons to be angry at the world.

Just remember, everyone: media has absolutely zero effect on anyone. We all live in magical bubbles and cannot be influenced by outside factors. Constantly receiving the same message over and over again has been proven to not have any effect on people.

This, by the way, is why we don't have societies or cultures.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have to disagree with the people saying it would be okay if the men were sexualized too. I don't think the solution to displaying characters as sexual objects is to display MORE characters as sexual objects. Unless the characters are strippers or prostitutes (or somehow have sexual poses incorporated into their character), there's really no need for ANY of them to be posed like that.

I'm not offended by female sexuality. Black Widow is a well-developed character on top of having sex appeal, so I don't see why I should be offended by her physical appearance, dress, or the fact that people find the character attractive. Because she is more than just that -- if she was a one-dimensional character that was NOTHING but sex appeal, that would be offensive

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

I'm offended there's no Black Widow figma prototype at Wonfes.
