Yeah, there's a difference between sex-as-plot-point vs sex-for-no-reason-except-to-make-the-character-seem-"liberated." I also find it kind of aggravating that the only female characters who are ever described as "in charge of her own sexuality" are the ones who have lots of meaningless casual sex with everything that moves. Female characters who sleep only with their partners, or are celibate, or only have sex when it's supposed to be meaningful for them, are never described that way.

You put it so well. Hat tip.

You don't understand. They are tight-ass Catholics or Mormon prudes. This thread says so. Only lots of sex is liberated, and anyone who doubts this is automatically a slut-shamer!

Just because someone expresses one viewpoint that you agree with doesn't mean that you can claim them for your side. We agree with one issue. I am not, however, on your bigoted, slut-shaming side.

Where does it say slut shaming in that comment?

Or are you so judgemental of women who don't conform to your lifestyle that you clutch pearls at the idea that they can choose to not have sex, or be monogamous? Do their lifestyle threaten you that much?

I made the secret, anon... and you said what I was trying to say so much better than I did.

Thank you! You just nailed (ha-ha) what always makes me so uncomfortable about the "in charge of her own sexuality" thing that gets thrown around with Strong Female Characters. There are so many things that it could be, but it's almost always pulled out to justify SFC's having lots of sexy sex.

I'm going to print out this comment and frame it, because it's the best thing I have ever read in my life.

*slow clap*

When women's sexual liberation has turned into "if you don't use your genital like I want you to, you are a slut-shaming backward loser", it is exactly the same oppression but with a different hat on.

So I agree with you whole hearted.
