I have to fight really hard against my knee-jerk reaction to dislike young, pretty female characters that aren't particularly funny or smart. Like, most recently, Allison Argent on Teen Wolf - I started out liking her reasonably well, but then she displayed little to no creativity or sarcarm (two traits that I really need in characters to like them). Her line "Can't I be strong and go to the dance?" should have had me screaming in happiness - instead, it just annoyed me. She seems SO MARY-SUE.

Now that the fandom has latched onto her as an EVIL VILLAIN THAT SHOULD BE KILLED OFF BECAUSE SHE HURT BBY DEREK, I'm finding myself liking her a lot better.

I wish I could like as many female characters are you, OP - but they tend to annoy me. A lot.

Also, to be entirely honest, there are a LOT of female characters in books that I love unashamedly. Virtually every female character Tamora Pierce has ever written. Hermione Granger. Mercy Thompson. They are imperfect, yet still strong, smart, interesting, and independent.

My issue is in the portrayals of women in (most) television and film that are geared towards mainstream audiences. These characters sometimes annoy me for no reason, like Allison (there's really no reason I shouldn't like her until at least Season 2). But other times there are very good reasons, like poor character development or tendencies towards too-perfect (why should I enjoy a character that I can't relate to on any level?)

Man I'm disappointed with Allison because I feel like she's a character that has sooo much potential and the writers aren't using it.

I think it's great that she really really wants to be strong, but then they just kind of have other characters manipulate her and never have her stand up to them. And even then they could make a story about that but they let Scott end up confronting Gerard when it should have been Allison.

I mean the Argents said they train their girls to be leaders. I want to see Allison learn to lead, especially since she could be crucial to making the code matter again because she has a reason to be understanding of werewolves.

AND JUST UGGHHH BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH POTENTIAL.

I KNOOOOW, she really could just be so much better!

I really do like that she has some sort of real fighting skill - archery - but it's not infallible. I also like that she's not usually damsel-in-distress. But they need to even her out a bit - I mean, I was pretty moody and impulsive, but wreaking havoc on my classmates seems a little extreme, even if I did think that they were responsible for my mother's death. And I really feel like the Gerard-manipulation storyline was a little too easy. I don't buy her killing, or viciously attacking, that easily.

I don't know - I'm really hoping that Allison can be single for a little while, figure her stuff out, and take on a slightly less psycho role in the Argent hierarchy. I LOVE the idea of her being groomed into a strong, definitive leader - like a female, slightly more open-minded version of Chris. I could totally get behind that. I want her explored outside of her involvement with Scott - we've gotten family relationships, and we've gotten romantic relationships, but I'd like to see more of Friend Allison. Don't really care who it's with, although I'd love it if her relationship with Lydia, Stiles, or Danny became stronger.

So, yeah. This is what I want out of my female characters. I want them flawed, and interesting, and dynamic. I would like the same thing from my male characters, but I think I know women better than men, so my standards are higher.
