That's quite repulsive and dehumanizing. You've decided to like a huge swathe of fictional characters solely because of their gender instead of judging them by their personalities and actions and viewing them as actual people.

That's even grosser than disliking all female characters, because you have an extra layer of nastiness by also being convinced that you're doing something good.

This is an odd position, OP. I rather wish you'd given us more to work with.

Personally, I know that I'm biased in favour of female characters in that I'm unfortunately more likely to sympathise or empathise with a female character than a male one. I'll go to greater lengths to cut them slack, or fanwank their inconsistencies, or subvert their stories.

But I can't quite wrap my head around blanket loving characters across the entire spectrum of everything. Female characters in old romances who are just ciphers or allegories? Female characters in genres you don't like? Female characters who are very obviously unrealistic wank-material for misogynistic authors? Female characters in fanfiction deliberately designed by an anti-shipper to torpedo your OTP? Agnes Wickfield?

I have a bias for female characters, but I can't love all of them. Some of them are just terrible.

Good on you, OP. I think that's a much better viewpoint than someone who hates all female characters simply for being female (and no, I don't think a LOT of people do this nor do I think disliking one female character = disliking them all. However, there are a few people out there who DO hate ALL female characters, regardless of their personalities or narratives or how they're written. Just like I'm sure there's at least one person out there who hates ALL male characters in the same way.)


I love female characters. I love a lot of female characters who are hated by the majority of the fandom. I sometimes find myself falling for female characters BECAUSE of the hate, as it makes me re-examine the canon to understand why everyone else loathes them so much. (See Cally/BSG or Lori/TWD)


That being said, there are still female characters I dislike. Not many, but enough that I could never make this statement.

... I would like to think there are better reasons to love or hate a character than their gender? Even that allowed, though, there are very few even archetypes of characters that I like across the board, and an entire gender is way too broad a spectrum to claim blanket appreciation from me.

I have to fight really hard against my knee-jerk reaction to dislike young, pretty female characters that aren't particularly funny or smart. Like, most recently, Allison Argent on Teen Wolf - I started out liking her reasonably well, but then she displayed little to no creativity or sarcarm (two traits that I really need in characters to like them). Her line "Can't I be strong and go to the dance?" should have had me screaming in happiness - instead, it just annoyed me. She seems SO MARY-SUE.

Now that the fandom has latched onto her as an EVIL VILLAIN THAT SHOULD BE KILLED OFF BECAUSE SHE HURT BBY DEREK, I'm finding myself liking her a lot better.

I wish I could like as many female characters are you, OP - but they tend to annoy me. A lot.

Yes, let's see all female characters as nothing but their gender. Let's not look at their personalities and allow ourselves to dislike female characters with personalities we don't enjoy and like female characters with personalities we do enjoy.

I don't like all female characters, but I do like most of them. And yeah I admit that (due to a lot of factors) I give female characters more slack than males much of the time.
