this makes you Satan

I know you're teasing but uh, why? She's a bad person, not a bad character.

She's not a "person" at all, she doesn't exist. She IS just a character, and a horrible one at that. Love JKR for creating a hateful villain, not Umbridge herself. I doubt that was the intention of her character.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Alrighty then.

How about Bella Swan? Love her, too?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
90% of her problems stem from her shitty boyfriend. So yes. I would marry Bella so hard and she would be 1000x more interesting.

You're beyond help.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

I can feel the smug superiority radiating from you. I have a strong feeling you think you're a better person because you love all female characters.

Why don't you love all male characters, eh?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Stop sniffing me! Anyway that's all in your head. Did I say I didn't love all male characters too?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon. I love Bella Swan from a narrative/device standpoint. Picking apart books like Twilight and figuring out why they work for so many people despite being so terrible (and having fun spotting all the errors) is awesome.

And I like Umbridge! She was an awful, sadistic woman and and interesting character. She was a woman with power and agency of her own and her mind set was so completely fascinating and fucked up. You don't get a lot of awful women villians as thought out and complex and Dolores Umbridge.

Umbridge is one of my favorite Harry Potter characters because she taps right into my primal hatred of people being UNFAIR.

And because, to this day, she is the only fictional character that I ever knew to get an honest, visceral reaction from my Dad. (Specifically, he came home one day, having listened to some of OotP in the car, and said, without any prompting, "I want to drive nails into her eyes.")

Bella Swan is just hateful, though. Beyond all the simpery teenage love, I just can't get past how terribly she treats her father and how justified she feels in doing so.

If I knew fandomsecrets was going to make me laugh so hard, I would've waited until after the party was over to get on.

I read an interesting article on Bella Swann and parentification once. Wish I could find it again. The author argued that a lot of Bella's apparently brattish behaviour and stunted social skills resonated with her own experience of having to take the adult role in her relationship with her own parents. It was a pretty compelling interpretation.

I'm a bit late, but I've been reading an awesome, very in-depth deconstruction of Twilight here: http://www.anamardoll.com/2011/02/twilight-twilight-deconstruction-index.html

I think Umbridge is a great character, too, mostly because she's an example of how much damage people who aren't All-Powerfully Evil ala Voldemort can be extremely dangerous and cause a lot of damage. She's a real world villain.

Loving a character for being a well-written villain =/= loving them as a person.

Umbridge is awesome.

I mean she's terrible, obviously. But I find her the most interesting of the HP villains. She's not evil because she got slapped with the evil!wand. She's petty and small-minded and twisted and bitter, and you know there's all sorts of interesting neuroses going on in there.

This. All of it.

Yeah she's an effective villain, but appreciating that hardly puts her under "lovable characters" umbrella, does it? Which is what the OP is saying.

Probably depends how you parse it. I love the character of Umbridge. Reading her villainy gives me pleasure.

Mind you, it's not like OP gave us a lot of context with which to work here.

I just love to hate her, like Regina from Once Upon a Time. They're just so wonderfully hateable. Cue that song What IS This Feeling from Wicked.

[personal profile] atgdng 2013-02-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. She's probably the realest villain in the series, and in a lot of other literature, in that there are probably people you rub elbows with everyday that would be just like her if given the power and chance. So nasty.

Aw, man. I should have read more of the thread because you said what I think but much better. LOL
