this makes you Satan

I know you're teasing but uh, why? She's a bad person, not a bad character.
mansfield: (Default)

[personal profile] mansfield 2013-02-10 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not a "person" at all, she doesn't exist. She IS just a character, and a horrible one at that. Love JKR for creating a hateful villain, not Umbridge herself. I doubt that was the intention of her character.

Alrighty then.

Loving a character for being a well-written villain =/= loving them as a person.

Umbridge is awesome.

I mean she's terrible, obviously. But I find her the most interesting of the HP villains. She's not evil because she got slapped with the evil!wand. She's petty and small-minded and twisted and bitter, and you know there's all sorts of interesting neuroses going on in there.

This. All of it.
mansfield: (Default)

[personal profile] mansfield 2013-02-10 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah she's an effective villain, but appreciating that hardly puts her under "lovable characters" umbrella, does it? Which is what the OP is saying.

[personal profile] grainne_mhaol 2013-02-10 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably depends how you parse it. I love the character of Umbridge. Reading her villainy gives me pleasure.

Mind you, it's not like OP gave us a lot of context with which to work here.

I just love to hate her, like Regina from Once Upon a Time. They're just so wonderfully hateable. Cue that song What IS This Feeling from Wicked.

[personal profile] atgdng 2013-02-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. She's probably the realest villain in the series, and in a lot of other literature, in that there are probably people you rub elbows with everyday that would be just like her if given the power and chance. So nasty.

Aw, man. I should have read more of the thread because you said what I think but much better. LOL

What's wrong with loving an awesome villain?
mansfield: (Default)

[personal profile] mansfield 2013-02-10 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
An awesome villain will make you hate them, not love them. Loving them would defeat their purpose in the story.
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-02-10 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I think you can love a villain. You love that they're so awesome. You love to hate them, in a way. It's kind of hard to explain.
mansfield: (Default)

[personal profile] mansfield 2013-02-10 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well nothing about the secret implied "love to hate", just "love" so...still don't understand how a character like Umbridge could possibly adhere to it.
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-02-10 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Love is a nuanced word and can take on different meanings depending on the context. I think it's fair to say OP wouldn't love Umbridge the same way s/he'd love Hermione.
tasogare_n_hime: (Default)

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2013-02-10 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not for me. Characters I love are characters I'm interested in villain, or not they are what keeps me invested in the story. If I hate a character I don't give a fuck about them, I don't care how valuable they are to the plot, or about anything they do.

Yes, exactly what I was trying to say.

[personal profile] atgdng 2013-02-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
+1. When I love characters I want to see more of them. They're captivating, fascinating, complex, but that doesn't mean they're nice people. They're enjoyable. They provoke emotion. Most of the characters I hate are the 'good' ones that are just cripplingly boring.

I loved the job the actress did, but that's not really the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
...just seeing that woman's smug little face has produced rage fires.

I hate her more than Moldy Voldy. So. Much. More.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that the fact someone loves all female characters - even the villainous ones - makes you so angry and offended.
