Good on you, OP. I think that's a much better viewpoint than someone who hates all female characters simply for being female (and no, I don't think a LOT of people do this nor do I think disliking one female character = disliking them all. However, there are a few people out there who DO hate ALL female characters, regardless of their personalities or narratives or how they're written. Just like I'm sure there's at least one person out there who hates ALL male characters in the same way.)

I love female characters. I love a lot of female characters who are hated by the majority of the fandom. I sometimes find myself falling for female characters BECAUSE of the hate, as it makes me re-examine the canon to understand why everyone else loathes them so much. (See Cally/BSG or Lori/TWD)

That being said, there are still female characters I dislike. Not many, but enough that I could never make this statement.

Thank you. :)

Why? It's still having a strong opinion just because they're female, with no regard to character, personality, or how well they've been written. It's the flip side of the same coin.

Yeah, it's still kinda creepy.

Not that OP's viewpoint is okay, but it's pretty obvious how it's a lot better than being a virulent misogynist.

Because love is better than hate? I don't agree with loving or hating an entire group of people simply because of their gender. Or their race. Or their sexuality. But if it's a choice between hating them or loving them, I think it's nice to see the positive side for once.

This love > hate shit is so short-sighted.

Love can also make you blind.

Usually this 'i love all female' stuff is some misplaced sense of girl power. There are some really shitty female characters that deserve criticism, and I don't think it is honorable to love them just because they are female. You need a better reason than that, otherwise it's ignorance.

That's how racism starts too. "I love white people, everyone else who is not white is not worthy of this unconditional love"

And once again, I'm not disagreeing with that. I never said we should love all female characters simply because they're female. I do not love or even like every single female character I've ever come across. There are plenty I had no interest in either way and several I have actively disliked. For the female characters I do love, I don't love them BECAUSE they're female. I will admit to having a bias toward female characters because I relate to them more often than to male characters and I cut them more slack than their male counterparts for a lot of reasons. All of this makes it easier for me to love and embrace female characters, but it does not mean I judge them solely on their gender.

My only point in the love > hate argument is that if we have to see an extreme view on the subject, I find it a nice change of pace that it's not the hatred we're so used to seeing. This does not mean I agree with the content of the secret or share the viewpoint of the secret-maker.

Well in one scenario your hating people and in another scenario your loving people. Better to love than to hate yeah?
thinkatory: ([SPN] Sam is overthinking.)

Huh. I hadn't realized how much I hate Cally until just now and that I don't actually have too many very good reasons to do so until just now.

I also hate Tory though.
mfirefly10: (BSG - cylon!Tory is better than you)

[personal profile] mfirefly10 2013-02-11 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I love 'em both but I really don't care if you don't.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
And I personally think it's sexist to either like OR dislike a character solely on account of their gender, because you are reducing that character solely to their gender with absolutely no care for WHO they are, only for WHAT.
mfirefly10: (DW - companions are awesome!)

[personal profile] mfirefly10 2013-02-11 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
And I don't disagree with that. As I said, I don't love every single female character ever. I just love a lot of them. Because there are a lot of awesome female characters out there. But I don't love them BECAUSE they're female. I love them because they're awesome. And I feel the same about male characters. If they're awesome, I love them. If they aren't, I don't.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah; honestly, a large part of the reason I started liking Lori as much as I ended up doing was because of the massive amount of hate for her in the fandom. I started thinking more about why she said, did, and thought the things she did, and she became more interesting to me through defending her.
mfirefly10: (TWD - I miss Lori)

[personal profile] mfirefly10 2013-02-11 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. And I think what I really love about Lori is that, at least in the first two seasons, she isn't the easiest character to love. Lori has a lot of flaws and she makes a lot of mistakes but that's what makes her so human and so relatable.
