1) Voice acting, and dubbing in particular, is a far smaller industry in the US than it is in Japan, which means that there are fewer regular VAs and even fewer good VAs.
2) Most regular VAs only have one "style," meaning that they're painfully recognizable from series to series.
3) Japanese doesn't always translate into English as succinctly; what may be 2 or 3 syllables in Japanese can turn into 6 or 7 in English, causing the line to either be rushed or significantly altered, inevitably altering the meaning and tone of the original scene.
4) Sometimes Japanese doesn't translate into English at all, and while (good) subs can just use the Japanese word and plop a translator's note in there, that doesn't happen with dubs, and again, information gets lost.

You're entirely free to watch dubs and enjoy them; my problem is when people argue that dubs are just as good as subs - they're not. It's a lower-quality product and always will be. A few diamonds don't make coal pretty.

I'm guessing you don't speak Japanese. Japanese VA quality is in no way superior to English VA quality. Japanese VAs have "one style" both as often and not as English VAs, and just because you can't understand their actual acting does not a diamond make. It's amazing what shit fans let slide because they're too busy reading subtitles.

Of course there's a disadvantage in dubbing from a different language in the case of lip flaps. But you'd be blatantly wrong if you thought Japan doesn't have the lip flap problem as well, even when the mouths are designed for them.

Additionally, I speak Japanese, and am pretty sick of the claim that some things "just don't translate." And they always bring up the fucking oneechan example or whatever. You don't need to have a perfect English word with the exact same meaning to have the same message, if there are some alterations in a dub for language/cultural purposes, it doesn't mean they are inaccurate to the actual meaning of the line.

This! I like it when translators focus more on conveying the meaning and spirit of the original than being as accurate as possible. The end result isn't perfect, but Japanese just doesn't translate very easily into English to begin with. When they focus on meaning more than accuracy, stuff like idioms, slang, wordplay, and cultural metaphors that don't have good one-to-one translations become less of an issue, and the final product flows better, makes more sense, and is easier to follow.
