sub snobs = stupid
(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)Ever since I learned Japanese (I've been in Japan for about five years now for work) I realized that Japanese dubs are not any better than English dubs. I never was hardcore about subs to begin with, because before I knew Japanese I could hardly appreciate if it was good acting or not, but in English you can understand the way the words are said, the stress, emphasis, what words are used....
To be honest, Japanese dubs can be all right, but they used basically the same voices over and over again. Especially for female characters. You either have the high pitched female who will speak as childishly and femininely as possible and ends her sentences in 'wa', or the husky female who is probably a villain. There's not much in between. I about died when I found out that the Japanese Tifa Lockheart in Advent Children was apparently considered "husky"... wtf.
Basically, English and Japanese voice actors are basically of the same caliber. Either you watch subs because it's easier to pretend that the acting is all right because you have one eye on the subtitles and can't understand Japanese anyway, or you watch English and have a mostly accurate representation of how the Japanese sounds to a native speaker. Obviously there are exceptions, there are amazing Japanese actors... but there are amazing English actors, too.
Now I find that most sub snobs are, sorry to say, just Japanophiles who criticize all dubs regardless of whether or not the dub was good. In one of your examples, I remember when the Death Note dub came out, and people immediately started bitching about how awful Light and L sounded when, I'm sorry, those guys are about as talented as they come for VAs.
