Honestly, when I watch that film, I see her more enjoying doing 'human things' than being around him. Enjoying the town, the clothes, the driving, the dancing, all the weird stuff she sees. After all, the song isn't called "By Your Side;" it's called "Part of Your World." Eric is a pretty attractive part of it but he was never all of it.

If Flotsam and Jetsam had pitched Ursula's idea pre-Eric, I'm almost 100% sure Ariel still would have taken the risk. It just happens that Ursula preys on Ariel's anger at her father and her new crush, linking her ability to retain her legs (something she sings early in the film that she's always wanted to have) to whether or not she can make Eric love her and kiss her (this also fascinating thing). And if she doesn't? She's Ursula's new pet. So yea, doing anything to make Eric fall in love has pretty high stakes.

I think if anyone really gets objectified in the film, it's Eric LOL. He's another human thing for her to explore. Ariel wants him cuz he's cute human man candy.

... You're not doing anything wrong. You're liking a character in a work of fiction. How can that possibly be a bad thing?

Besides, how can her portrayal be "inaccurate"? AFAIK, the character wasn't based on a real person, so the musical version of her is as true or as accurate as the book version.

The difference is that the Bible is inherently sexist and racist, whereas atheism is not. There is no atheism handbook telling us this and that. If you don't believe in a higher power? You're an atheist. So that includes all types of people; racists, sexists, feminists, gay people, straight people, people of all color and of all nationalities.

There's some business outside a town I travel through whenever I visit my family, and it's called Mera Dog. It annoys me to no end every time I see it, because the language mix is so ugly.

The 'Dog' part is definitely English (good thing, too, since 'dog' means 'died' in Swedish!), since they sell (and make?) dog food, but 'Mera' seems to be Swedish. It means 'more', only it's spoken language/casual, so it's not even supposed to be used in written language! And the name doesn't even make grammatical sense!

Basically I did. I was up front with my mom about how I am sacrificing a lot to come spend time with them and that I'm just not up for giving up my entire vacation and driving so much and then dealing with that kind of stuff. My mom, dad, brother, and sister-in-law on their own are fine; for the most part, they're not too obnoxious. It's getting all the extended relatives together that becomes a dogpile of WTFery. LOL

I don't know if Mom said something to everyone else or what, but it was an amazingly wank free holiday. All the relatives pretty much kept their mouths shut about religious and political stuff. There was one moment where my aunt was being ridiculous, and I was all, "You are being ridiculous." I didn't leave the room or bite my tongue; I said what I thought and that effectively shut down the line of convo.

Do I think it will always be this easy or magical? No. I fully expect to have to tell my uncle at some point that if he insists on spewing racist slurs out of one side of his mouth while tearfully singing "Mary, Did You Know?" out of the other, the baby Jesus may in fact die of shame. LOL But overall, it went way better than I expected.
