...isn't there only one issue out so far?
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

Yup.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-02-12 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
And even despite that, I think they certainly portrayed Hulkling as being more than Wiccan's boyfriend.

Admittedly, Wiccan was just a little stupid, but not in an Idiot Ball way, just more of a "You probably should've taken a moment to think things through before you go forward with your plan..." kind of way.

I haven't read much about YA, but teenagers are kind of stupid and melodramatic and have poor judgement of the consequences of their actions, so I didn't think it was anything outrageous.

I mean, I didn't like the issue too much, but apparently nu52 DC has conditioned me to expect loooooooong draaaaawn out aaaaarrrcccss that take foreverrrrrrr.

I also think Hulkling was portrayed as more than just Wiccan's boyfriend... but I feel like the emphasis remained on Wiccan, which is a thing I feel fairly often. But, hey, first issue.

OH! And Wiccan may have been a little stupid, but I don't recall that being terribly different from the way he was in the first Young Avengers run.

This makes me so glad I opted not to pick it up. The end of Loki's arc in JIM just left me cold. I like it so much better now that Sif is running around killing things.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think not!Kid!Loki is also a huge draw for the new fangirls. And honestly a lot of these new fans don't have a whole lot to compare it to, so I can understand why they don't see its flaws

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the only people who give a fuck about (Not)Kid Loki are the people who were already reading JiM, so yeah, most of them are probably used to or like Gillen's writing.

Really? One of the worst single issues? I mean, I can see why someone might not like it, but at least it didn't have anything offensive in it and the art was pretty solid...

I don't know about worst ever... that seems extreme to me. But I read Rise of Arsenal, so my perspective is probably skewed. ;)

I'll see your unpopular opinion and raise you another: I don't think Gillen is all that great of a writer.

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-02-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
...I don't really see why people are making such a fuss one way or the other tbh. IMO it wasn't anything special or particularly disastrous. I don't think there's enough of the series to judge accurately yet. (Okay, the one issue is out and yes you can judge that, but...it's just one issue. Who knows where it'll go from here.)

This is coming from someone who is expecting to feel very disappointed because of the lack of Cassie, Eli and Tommy, but...it's comics, and comics change their line-ups all the time.

As for what Billy did...yes, it was monumentally stupid.

(And Teddy is probably my favorite character, besides Kate. I love them pretty equally.)

I thought the Kate stuff was really good. Bad ass who has sex and doesn't judge herself for it? Hell yes.

And I don't get the hate for the Hulkling/Wiccan story, since it just started, but this is my first experience with most of these characters. The only reason I know who Kate is is because of the Hawkguy comic.

I loved Kate's scenes in the comic. And Loki...and Miss America...and Teddy.

Billy was the one I didn't like as much, but I can seem him as being a bit self-centered so it kind of worked too. I really miss Jonas and Cassie, and Tommy and Eli, but like you said line-ups change.

Though I would like to know why Eli was made off-limits.

Pretty much my stance on it. I loved Kate's bit - yay for cliche subversions! - and Loki's bit confused me a bit (probably because I don't read JiM) and I have no idea who the fuck Miss America is, but honestly, I still quite like it.

Yeah, the best reaction I can muster for the whole thing is "meh". I mean, I wasn't really pumped up either way for the book to begin with but it definitely went in the once-read-and-quickly-forgotten pile. The Kate bits were nice (I'm finally starting to warm to her...) but past that I just didn't care.

I'm reading for Loki and I'm happy so far /shrugs

I found it pretty "meh", but hey - only one issue so far. I thought Teddy calling Billy out on his selfishness and pointing out that, hey, he has needs too, was actually pretty good. Teddy lost the only parent he ever knew, his home, and found out everything he thought he knew about himself was wrong. I've always been bothered by the fact that he seemed to be all "angst? what angst?" about it.

Billy's reaction on the other hand, not handled so well. I attribute that at least partly to the art - it seemed weird and cartoony, and WTF is up with his boyband hair?

I liked the stuff with Kate, though. No opinion on kid Loki. All in all, I'm gonna wait a few more issues to see how I feel on this series.

I sent in an e-mail just to express my distaste for the hair

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-02-12 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
But yeah, considering everything Billy went through, I was a little @_@ at the limited development on his part, even if he was actively trying to be stoic for everyone else's sake (which is easily something I can see him doing). Hopefully they'll get a bit more into his issues in this new series since Children's Crusade focused so heavily on the others. :)
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2013-02-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah no I felt this was completely consistent with how idiotic Billy can be.

I still didn't like it because I don't want another freakin' Children's Crusade that's so focused on Billy that the rest of the cast is just set decoration, but still.

Note: I do not dislike Billy.

I'm hoping it gets a lot better, because yes it's only a first issue. But I'm going to be honest in saying that I'm mostly here for America and Kate.

Here for Kate, kid!Loki, and a white-haired pretty boy, though I do love me some Wiccan, too. :P And I haven't 'met' Miss America Chavez yet (does she appear in any other comics or is this her first appearance?), but I quite like her. ♥

In all honesty, though, I kind of figured self-centeredness and idiocy are a bit part and parcel of his powers, and anything of his character that he inherited from the Scarlet Witch. I mean, she kind of ripped apart reality and then took all the mutants' powers away because she wanted kids. I like the study of "sometimes good guys with unlimited power can cause even more damage than the bad guys".

Can I just ditto all of the this? I wasn't the biggest fan of this and winced when I saw Billy's angst taking center stage AGAIN, but there were enough good bits that I'm more than willing to give it a good six issues at least
