Anime Recs?

[personal profile] morieris 2013-02-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
After finishing PMMM and starting PSG today, I'm almost done. This is my first foray into anime.
-Preferably they're short
-Preferably it's fantasy or adventure

Baccano! is only 16-episodes long, and has both fantasy and adventure elements. Then there's Durarara!!, which is made by the same production company, and has 24-episodes.

I'm trying to remember other shows I've watched lately that are finished/are fairly short, but I don't watch a lot of anime anymore and also I have terrible memory.

Oh! And Fate/Zero and Fate/stay night.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena isn't that short (39 episodes IIRC, so not like Naruto-long), but it is hands down my favorite anime series of all time. So that one.

Adventure (more adventure than fantasy)
Samurai Champloo
Last Exile
Basilisk
Fushigi Umi no Nadia (oldie but goldie)

Fantasy/Adventure (a bit of both)
Serei no Moribito
Kemono no Sou-ja Erin (fairly long)
The Twelve Kingdoms
Wolf's Rain
Fractale (fairly short)
FullMetal Alchemist (fairly long! There are two versions, I like both, but many like FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood better)
Vision of Escaflowne (the series)

A couple off the top of my head:
-Mawaru Penguindrum (fantasy, only ~20 episodes)
-The Girl Who Leapt through Time (movie, time traveling)
-Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (more shounen than shoujo, but it's adventure and also under 30 episodes)
Only thing about Penguindrum is that it's like Utena (if you know anything about that show) in that DEEP MEANINGS and everything you thought you knew in the beginning is not by the end- but it's pretty.

If you liked PMMM, a lot of the same people did a show called Psycho Pass which is airing right now, and just as good.

It's more Blade Runner meets Minority Report then fantasy/adventure though.

I know nobody will watch it when I rec it but ... Gunbuster (seriously, it's only six episodes)

Escaflowne? It's not too long, only 26 episodes

Last Exile is pretty good. And what I've seen of Claymore so far. The other ones that are coming to mind aren't exactly fantasy, though. BUT I will list them anyway.

When They Cry
RahXephon
Witchhunter Robin

all my suggestions aren't partilcarly recent as I prefer completed seris instead of WIP. also off the top of my head without my anime shelf to check:

Darker than Black

Fullmetal Alchemist (first version short, FMA brotherhood is remake and looong)

Full Metal Panic! (different to above, 3 seasons of varying length and type. first is mostly lgiht hearted highschool adventure, 2nd is a comedy third is a darker adventure)

Golden oldies:

evangelion

Trigun

Cowboy Bebop

Generator Gawl

Outlaw star

Blue Submarine No 6

oldies i didn't enjoy but are popular:

fruits basket

escaflowne

How about movies?

Nausicaa in the Valley of the Winds is beautiful and amazing, and a futuristic fantasy.
Laputa is also lovely, and takes place more or less in the same universe.

Series:
My favorite is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but it's probably longer than you want. Steampunk-ish fantasy piece on the horrors of war, the joys of family (birth and otherwise), and lots and lots of magic alchemy. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) has a rather different storyline, as it was completed long before the manga both stories were based on was finished. Both are decent (I prefer the manga to either, though).
Cowboy Bebop is pretty cool; futuristic, has some really eccentric characters, and a few movies, as well. Three bounty hunters, a savant child, and a mentally-enhanced dog track criminals around the universe.
Moribito is absolutely lovely, about a woman protecting a child prince in early Japan.

Why has only one person said Cowboy Bebop? It is the BEST starter anime for anyone. It is short. Has great characters. Has kickass music. Cowboy Bebop.

I second Baccano! and Durarara!! (I'd suggest watching Baccano! first tho).

Another anime that came out around the same time as PMMM is Mawaru Penguindrum (24 episodes). It's by the same guy who did Utena and I really enjoyed it.

I also love love Princess Jellyfish (11 eps). It's short and a great look at an awkward girl trying to find her place in life. It has a great comical cast.

Other fav anime of mine: Cowboy Bebop (24 eps), Kino's Journey (13 eps), Seirei no Moribito (26 eps), The Twelve Kingdoms (45 eps a longer anime, but so so worth it), and Haibane Renmei (13 eps).

Dennou Coil - 26 episodes; COMPUTERS ARE MAGIC. AND ALSO SORT OF FREAKY. Also: badass female leads.
Saki - 25 episodes; about ridiculous souped-up mahjong; really fun and full of lesyay all over the place. (It's not technically fantasy, but it's still far from reality.)
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha - first series is 13 episodes, but there are several sequels/additons and whatnot if you enjoy it. Magical girl shows, yo.
Natsume Yuujinchou - technically 4 seasons (this, "Zoku," "San," and "Shi") of 13 episodes each. Boy who sees demons/ghosts! It paces more like a slice-of-life than a true fantasy/adventure, but there are definitely fantastical elements to it.

Puchi Puri Yuushi (or, Petite Princess Yucie)

24 episodes. Five girls are competing to become the Platnium Princess but become friends along the way and g on a bunch of adventures, in a Western-ish fantasy setting and they're all lesbians it's very cute and emotional.

The Daughter of Twenty Faces

A young Japanese girl becomes the apprentice of a world class master thief called Twenty Faces. It's set in the 1950's, so it's kind of like historical, action, adventure, with a twist of 50's sci-fi towards the second half. The first five or so episodes are rather light-hearted, and then boom, drama. But it still retains some light-heartedness vs something like PMMM. It's 22 episodes total.

I liked Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple and it was streaming on Netflix not long ago so probably still is.

Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nightwalker!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightwalker:_The_Midnight_Detective

It's only 12 episodes long. It's about a vampire detective.

I watched it a long time ago, so I don't know if it's just nostalgia talking or if it aged well, but I still think it's worth a shot. vOv

Also, it has a totally rad and chill opening:

Try "Now and Then, Here and There", because damn, it's so good yet so underrated.

FLCL, 6 episodes of fun.

Mushishi, ~20some episodes of Japanese folklorish travels, it's very laid-back and pretty.

Ergo Proxy? It's more cyberpunk than fantasy-adventure but I liked it a lot.
