"Javert, the policeman in LM, is concerned only with justice, which he defines as the punishment of the guilty. Vimes, the policeman in NW, is equally obsessed by justice, but he defines it as the protection of the innocent."

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 12:27 am (UTC)(link)1830, frankly hilarious etching of a barricade being charged, with chairs and chests flying everywhere. http://lettres.ac-rouen.fr/romantisme/peinture/barricade.jpg
1871, Commune de Paris. Now, that's a barricade! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/27/Commune_de_Paris_barricade_rue_d'Allemagne.jpg
1968, http://www.parisenimages.fr/Export450/1000/259-12.jpg
Since then, Paris has covered some of its paved roads with macadam... They were getting tired of barricades.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)Vimes' barricades went up to create islands of calm in a city that had already erupted in an attempt to overthrow a corrupt leader. The Republic of Treacle Mine Road was formed largely in an attempt to keep the peace. The Les Mis barricades, conversely, went up specifically to cause disorder and rebellion to spread, in order to reverse the tentative peace caused by the previous change of power. Possibly justifiably, yes, but I'm wondering if Vimes wouldn't have considered that just a breach of the peace with very little to gain, and a lot of people in the crossfire waiting to get hurt?

"Continuously!"
Made somewhat less convincing by the fact that he then did, in fact, actually fight in the rebellion, but at least he tried.
