I think it depends whether the condom is part of the scene or just an awkward add in that slows down the action.

e.g. in scene:
Harry shyly pulled a rather dogeared condom packet from his backpocket and handed it to Draco. Draco looked it at and laughed. "How long have you been holding on to that for?" Harry blushed nervously, "Since I was 11."

add in:
Harry stopped kissing Draco for a moment while he opened the top drawer of his bedside cabinet and pulled out a condom. He slipped it on and then turned back to Draco.

Neither of those seem bad to me, honestly. If anything, the first one is worse--how on Earth would Harry Potter have gotten a condom at age 11?

Vending machine in a public toilet, obv.

Outside the school nurse there is always boxes of condoms and doctors offices and the youth clinic and so on?

or is that a Norwegian thing?

Lol I think the majority of American parents would have an aneurysm, even though it's probably a really good idea.

More to the point, condoms tend to have expiration dates. So unless this scene is happening when they're like thirteen, it's probably not good anymore.

THIS. My first thought was, "Um, I don't think that's any good anymore, sweetie. Unless you're way younger than I just pictured you in my head."

MTE

Also, carrying one in your back pocket exposes it to body heat which is not good for the latex. In the very short term, I imagine that it's fine (you expose it to body heat when you *use* it after all) but over time, that ought to just make the latex degrade faster.

I actually would prefer the second example.

Can I ask why? Just curious...

DA, but

I like that line and feel it can work very well in a fic because depending on which act you lay the emphasize on in your scene (which really should always be shaken up a little) other things can fade to the background.

Hmmm, compared it to getting undressed for example. Sometimes a fic is structured in a way that the undressing part is really a big part of the focus. You know in the case of strip-tease fics, or really slow foreplay stuff etc. In that case, I expect getting undressed to have a lot of attention and detail. Sell it to me. Describe the sensation of shirts sliding off, how buttons are being undone teasingly, how someone is getting their jeans unzipped over their erection. Cause it is one of the pillars on which you are building this fic.

But say, another time you are writing a fic that maybe focuses more on characters performing a certain kink or position or using a new toy or what not. Meaning that you are making that the pillar in your fic. In a fic like that, I wouldn't expect undressing to get more attention than 'He quickly stripped on his way to the bed, practically vibrating with excitement as he pulled out the new 15 inch bad dragon toy he had been waiting to surprise his partner with.'

Condom use is the same way to me. If that condom or the pairing using a condom is a bigger part of the narrative, then a line like in the first example works better maybe. But if condom use is just an established part of the dynamic but not something that is focus of the fic, then a line like the second one works better. Fiction is all about balancing stuff out.

AYRT

The first feels more forced, while the second feels more like natural actions during sex.

I feel like finding the second example "bad" hinges on a pessimistic outlook on readers. It's not like most people don't register words quickly (those old enough to be reading smut). A line like that is barely going to "slow" me down, it just makes me go "oh, they're using a condom" and I'm right back in the action.

It reminds me in a distant way of how novice writers will try so hard to vary "he said" "she said" dialogue tags to the point of absurdity, afraid of repetition and not realizing that the tag is virtually invisible to readers; people don't pay any mind to it unless it's made a big deal of or used incorrectly. Unless the condom use is drawn out, a reader's going to have passed over it and continued in two seconds.

yeah, I don't have a problem with either of those either.
