Funny, I do the same thing.

I don't know about the singer -- because I know that's not actually what it means -- but it's definitely enough to sour me on a song.

I'm not very fond of "baby", either.

For me, "baby" has almost become a word with two different meanings: it's either a noun meaning 'very young child (infant or toddler)' (can also be used metaphorically: "Don't be such a baby"), or it's an interjection used in love songs.

I can't bear it when I hear couples calling each other baby or babes, it makes me cringe.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. And for that matter, if any guy ever called me a little girl it would be a massive dealbreaker (unless I could go around calling him a little bouncing baby boy without him getting mad, anyway...)

But, seriously. Yuck. Baby is okay because I'm used to it, but "little girl" will always make me think of an actual little girl.

Thanks, I'm going to have 'Enjoy The Silence' in my head all night, now.

Oh man, that sucks for you. I'm sorry, OP.

    (Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's a creepy term. I'd do the same OP.

Song lyrics have a sorta creepy language all their own. Like how "sister" is also used as a romantic endearment. But I'm so used to it I barely think about it anymore.

One of my favorite movies ever is The Lost Boys.

Cry Little Sister is the "love theme" from the movie and the lyrics are something like

Cry, little sister - Thou shall not fall
Come to your brother - Thou shall not die
Unchain me, sister - Thou shall not fear
Love is with your brother - Thou shall not kill

Needless to say, "little girl" is pretty tame compared to the implied incest in the above lyrics. And I still love it.

Songs are different animals, like one of the other comments above mine said. It's difficult to take terms like "little girl" literally. At least for me.

I don't like this either. When I hear "little girl" I usually picture seven and under... I'm not a fan of "baby" as a term of romantic endearment either, although I'm pretty much used to that one.

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
    Or I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end, little girl

Well you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end, little girl

    Let this be a sermon
    I mean everything I've said
    Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end, little girl

I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end, little girl
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na

Doesn't bother me. I love that Mr. Big song "To Be With You" where he sings:

    Hold on, little girl
Show me what he's done to you...

there was a guitar hero song that was sort of like this. creeped me out when i played.

the little grammar line is amusing

Anyway, I don't necessarily go *there* but it is a pretty weird pet name imo.

Huh, I never thought of it that way. But then again, I usually listen to instrumentals.

lmao the first song I thought of was Be with You by Mr. Big.

I love Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl", but I always flinch at one line. "My, how you have grown" may be the creepiest thing it's possible to say to someone you used to sleep with.

Me too. I'm okay with just "girl" and also "babe" and "baby" (you can call a guy baby) but not "little girl." I also can't stand "child" (ruins Sweet Child of Mine, unfortunately).

    (Anonymous) 2013-02-17 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, "I'm on Fire" is one of the sexiest songs IMO, and not only is there "little girl", but there's also "daddy".
