How did you get introduced to your favorite shows?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Share your backstory for watching and/or being in the fandom for your favorite shows! When did you first see it? How did you first decide to watch it? What was your first reaction to it?

A friend. Always. I don't have a TV and I don't often look for new media to consume because I prefer to just bask in things I already love, but any time I fall in love with a new show, movie, or book, it's because a friend recommended it.

My current favorite right now is Grimm, and I first decided to watch it because my besty thought it would be up my alley because of cops + supernatural things. My first impression was that it was so full of research fail and unlikable characters that I wasn't sure why it existed, and then it grew on me? It does have a lot of neat ideas, and I really like some of the characters after they had a few episodes to develop. Plus, sweet dialogue at points. :)

All my backstories for getting into my fav shows are lame. They usually go like this: hey this synopsis sounds interesting. I'm gonna watch it. Or like this: I love actor blah blah in that show, so I have to give this one a try!

My reactions to the shows have varied. For Supernatural is was: these guys are hot, the show premise looks like it has merit. Farscape: Please say this show gets better. These first episodes are painful to watch. Buffy: I can't believe my mom is letting me watch this show!!!

Well, with TMNT (the new Nickelodeon show), it was a strange process. I'd watched the 80's cartoon as a kid, but it never was a fannish interest for me. I was ambivalent at first to the Nick toon and after watching the pilot, I wasn't all that enthused. I recall thinking it was a poor man's Teen Titans (unaware that one of the showrunners actually worked on TT) and that was about it at the time. I was more interested in Green Lantern: TAS, too.

Then GLTAS went on forced hiatus a week or two later, and I was left with not much else to watch on Saturday mornings. After seeing some people post stuff on Tumblr in regards to TMNT 2k12, I finally decided to give the show a second chance, and I spent the remainder of the weekend getting caught up on all the episodes that had aired up until that point. Suffice to say, the Turtles got me, hook, line, and sinker.

It ain't a perfect show by any means, but it makes me laugh and I find it to be generally entertaining overall.

I have literally liked Star Trek as long as I can remember. I remember very early on being EXTREMELY freaked out by a Next Gen episode (I think it was the one with Tasha Yar's sister) at a playmate's house when I must have been, like, 5 or 6. And then I remember reading the Star Trek Encyclopedia from the library when I was maybe a couple years older than that and just absolutely being fascinated by it, and yeah, that's pretty much how I got into it. For a long time I actually didn't watch Star Trek so much as I read old Star Trek novels (especially those crappy old TNG paperbacks which I loved), as my parents were rather anti-television and very pro-library. But yeah. Love that Star Trek.

I got into Queer as Folk from reading a slash fic where one of the characters went to this gay club called Babylon. I shared the fic with my friend (because it was hot) and she made an offhand remark how that's the club from QaF.
And then I started watching it. I wanted to leave a comment on the fic telling the author how they got me into a new show.

For nearly all of them: Saw one episode on T.V. and kept watching.

A few I found on the net after hearing good things.

I got into D.Gray-man partly because it was in Shonen Jump and partly because the episodes were on the site I was using to watch something else. I found a few different series that way.
Kingdom Hearts was because of my RP partner at the time, who is now just my partner and gets me into everything else that I've watched/read since then :P He has amazing taste in shows, though, so it's awesome.

Usually I hear about it online, check out what people are saying, then watch the first ep. Other times my friends recommend it so I give it a try.

A couple of stories:

I had been exposed to (and spoiled for most of) Buffy through TVTropes, long before I ever watched it. I had planned to check it out lots of times, but never really got around to it. In 2010, my freshman year of college, my roommate was a big Buffy fan and often watched the show on her laptop, and often had episodes of it paused on her screen and stuff, which eventually got me so curious, I checked a few episodes out, my first episode being "Halloween" followed by "What's My Line" and "School Hard", and got hooked.

The first Doctor Who-related thing I ever watched (although I had read about the show and had a solid understanding of what it was about) was the fanvid "When I Ruled The World" by dib0r (now Di Wey). The vid's been deleted from youtube, which is a complete tragedy because I'm not sure where else it's been hosted, although I luckily have it downloaded. It's my favorite DW vid in existence, and it's amazing. Better than Handlebars.

I only watched it because I really liked some vids in other fandoms she had made, so when the video first popped up on my youtube subscription list in 2008 I decided "what the hell" and watched it. Was utterly gobsmacked with amazement because it was full of everything that I had thought only existed in my imagination, immediately went to watch "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" to see if the vibe I got was accurate, and fell in love right away.

It's blocked. T_T I want to see this "better than Handlebars" business.

LOL whoops I just deleted the comment because I realized that :D

Um, I'll get back to you if I find a better way to host it. ;) Dunno if it's really better than Handlebars, I'm biased because I have a filter on my memory of it because it's all full of my first impression of the show EVER, but it holds up every time I rewatch it so... *shrugs*

You just made me realise that I have no idea how it happened. Ok, perhaps I remember the story about Granada Sherlock Holmes (...I just kept seeing Brett and Rathbone referenced as "the best", and, since I couldn't bring myself to watch Rathbone films because of Watson, I ended up watching Granada), but that's about all. I don't know how I got into Poirot. I don't know how I got into Murder Rooms. I don't even remember how I learnt about Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Oh well, what the hell.

Two of my college roommates used to tweet each other about SVU sometimes, so the summer after I lived with one/before I lived with the other I decided to watch some of the marathons on USA and got hooked. From there I progressed to Criminal Intent and mothership reruns.

TV Tropes got me to watch Victor/Victoria.

Ao3 and F!S made me interested in Teen Wolf but I didn't actually start watching it until my friend suggested seeing it as an excuse to hang out with each other. She also happens to be one of my few friends who is deeply amused when I get annoyed by little things. So watching it together is perfect. (Now I'm considering writing for it sooo... fuck me.)

Mostly I'll just be curious about them when I see them on TV and tune in randomly. For anime, almost always due to recommendations.

Sometimes/frequently I'll stumble in after all the hype is over about something, having not heard of it or not heard enough of it to interest me, and then love a thing. This happens with approximately 99% of all anime I've ever liked.

Aw I feel bad that I missed this thread but

My husband and I started watching Battlestar Galactica because his best friend in Israel suggested it. This was right around the time S2 had started. We were like "what?" because the first BSG series was so corny and neither of us were into it but he was like "NO GORDY... NO." (Gordy is what he calls my husband.) So we went to Tower and bought the first season dvd box and I remember staring at the box art of Caprica Six with the weird glowing red eyes and thinking... uhhhh (because you know, SCI-FI CHANNEL). Then we took it home and watched it and were pleasantly amazed.

I forgot to mention that apparently BSG was kinda popular in Israel at the time (at least with our friend's friends) and I can totally see why

I remember seeing a very vague trailer for Lost, but missed the premier ep. Then my mom called and was all "There's this crazy-ass show with a bunch of hot people crashed on an island and there's a monster and one of the hobbits and a wheelchair and a pregnant girl and some idiot male model running around trying to get pens, it was batshit WATCH IT." So I did. It remained batshit until the end. <3

For doctor who, my dad always watched it, so when it came back on in 2005 he watched it but I just saw it in the background. When s2 started I thought I'd give it a try and that was that. For most things though, I just find out about then through tumblr, ontd, etc.
