1. Merchandise. There's a ton of toys for the actual Disney Princess. Very little for anyone who is not. Being included means more merch, and some pretty quality stuff. Like a sorority, I guess.
2. Fandom. Since the franchise includes the most popular heroines, most of Disney's fandom tends to focus on these girls. There's tons of really superb fan art, graphics, communities and so on dedicated to these girls only.
3. Since people and Disney give priorities to the franchise girls, I can see fans of the other heroines feeling like their girl is left out. Some of them actually get irrationally angry at the franchise because of it.
4. Park stuff. The Disney princesses get more cast appearances, shows, and locations devoted to them.

The entire franchise was conceived when one of the Disney execs attended a Disney on Ice showing, and realized that so many girls already came as them. I don't doubt for a second that if Disney felt including Kida would be profitable she would be there.
Disney did try doing a Disney Heroes and Disney Villains thing, but those simply weren't popular enough and were abandoned.

Kida comes from a movie that didn't do very well, as far as I remember. Therefore, I don't expect her to be as well marketed as, say, Belle. I think that's sad and disappointing, but not something I can see a solution for.
I'm less ragging on Disney for doing the smart marketing thing and more just frustrated with it because of certain ideas it perpetuates. I honestly don't have a solution other than maybe trying to make it more inclusive, but I'm not going to blame Disney if they don't do that. Nor am I going to blame the people who love and support the princess line. I'm just... frustrated I guess. Not at anyone in particular, just at the problem itself.

I guess all I, or any of us, can really do is wait to see where Disney takes the line. It can't last forever, though I see it having great longevity. But when it does go we'll see what it gets reinvented as, or replaced with.
