It's internet lingo now, sorry. It isn't going away until the next big slang comes along.

Well, the movie isn't called "Extraction," now is it?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought, the term "inception" doesn't mean the meaning in itself but just the name of the movie where that concept was taking place. At least I hope. Geez.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
A fandomsecret complaining about the use of "-ception" in fandom. Often in fandomsecrets.

This meme is named after the MOVIE, not the canon term.

Now go back to writing Arthur/Eames.

KIDDING

You're expecting the majority of fans to have both logic skills and a good vocabulary? Must be nice to be that optimistic.

I thought it was just a reference to the title. Like how all Homestuck crossovers and AUs are ____stuck. And maybe some other fandoms do that kind of thing, I just can't think of any.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I've watched the movie, but for the inception, they went several layers deep, so, um, the dream within a dream still holds. And even if it didn't, I'm pretty sure the meme is at least partly about putting an idea in someone's head that wasn't there before, which is an inception. Plus, that was the name of the movie, of course people are going to use it.

It's a reference to Inception, the movie. Not the act of inception in said movie. It's perfectly legit and perfectly logical.

I tend to say "Xs within Xs", referencing "plans within plans" from Dune, rather than "Xception".

You sound really butthurt about a bit of slang.

I love saying "____ception". (not) sorry.
citrinesunset: (Default)

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2013-02-18 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Like others have pointed out, the slang term seems more based on the name of the movie than the way the term is used within the movie. So I don't mind people using it as internet lingo.

What does get on my nerves is that the Inception tag on Tumblr is filled with stuff like this. It makes it hard to find stuff that's actually about the fandom, sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why you're so upset about the misuse of a term that wasn't even used in the way it's currently used before the creation of what was kind of a bad movie.

In other words: WHO GIVES A FUCKING SHIT? It's completely made up to begin with! This is like saying, "why doesn't anyone use the term 'light saber' correctly in real life?"

Stop having fun you guys!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
No seriously stop it is making me upset so stop it now. I mean it. Don't make me come down there.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
If I wanted to be even more pedantic -- oh, who am I kidding. Of course I do. Anyway, "ception" is a word root, so every time someone tacks it on as a suffix I start imagining where it could fit in the lineup of inception, conception, exception, deception, reception, interception, am I forgetting anything? [googles 'Latin prepositions'] ah yes, perception, contraception. I believe English doesn't have preception, but it does have precede.

...Really, though, as someone above pointed out, Reckless Suffix Misappropriation has been well established in English since the dawn of Scandalgate if not earlier, so I should probably get used to it -- especially as I can't suggest an equally catchy alternative.

I would typically be on OP's side, but the other day I saw a bit about a gorilla eating its own excrement and the comedian declared, "Tomorrow this gorilla will make a poo, within a poo..It's a POO-CEPTION! I NEED A KICK OVER HERE!" and I laughed myself sick, so, yeah, afraid it's too funny for me to empathize.
