To be honest, I don't read anything that's majorly OOC, because I get two sentences in, notice it's really OOC, and then quit the fic. What does happen is I'll be reading a fic that gets progressively more OOC as it goes, and eventually I get to a point where it's an awful mess and I hate everything. >:(

...by which I mean I can't name name's, but suffice to say it pretty much went from "Tony/Avenger shameless PWP" to "Tony is familiar with tumblr lingo, identifies as pansexual, knew Obadiah was evil from the start, mopes like a ditched prom date when Avenger leaves, barely knows Pepper's name, etc, etc." That's just the most recent one, though--this happens a lot in Avengers fandom.

I'm very picky about characterisation, to the point that I actually rarely read fanfiction for my OTP now because I just know most of it is either OOC, badly-written (by badly-written, I mean that the most prominent author for the ship doesn't seem to have acquainted herself with commas yet), or not to my taste (I adore curtain!fic - good look finding cute curtain!fic in Supernatural fandom unless it's one of the three most popular ships!). Yeah, these days I prefer to just write whatever it is I want to read. When I read it again in three months time, I'll read it like a stranger's writing and it'll be good for everyone.

Agreed, pretty much. When I initially get into a fandom, anything will do...but then I get picky and change my standards, and then I'm left with pretty much my own writing. Which I'm mostly okay with.

...out of curiosity, what exactly is curtain!fic?

It's SamnDean gen, and it's probably one of my favorites. I don't know if it's up your alley (since it's not exactly fluffy, though it's bittersweet), but I thought it was pretty IC.

Okay, this might not be the most OOC ever but a couple days ago I was reading a Wincest fic, and Dean was like, "Sam, you love my cock," and Sam was like, "No, Dean, I love what it represents" and started talking about how Dean's dick was a symbol of their love, and Dean didn't even make fun of him, and I know for a fact it wasn't meant to be cracky.

I've never even seen Supernatural, and still find that hilarious.

Forget the name of the fic, but it was Harry Potter. A friend and I nicknamed this fic the Worst Snarry Ever. First, a list of things this fic did NOT include: Hermione, any Weasleys, any of Harry's other friends, scenes actually set at Hogwarts, Voldemort, or any mention of Voldemort's existence.

It involved Snape adopting Harry because the Dursleys abused him. Harry, because he was so grateful for being rescued, turned himself into Snape's sex slave and begged Snape to impregnate him. (Was the mpreg warned for? Hell no! No warning for the sex and violence either.) Snape doesn't want to, because he's "not a good enough man to be a father" and starts MOPING about how his life is so miserable. Harry gets pregnant anyway through use of a deus ex machina, the two have the most godawful pregnant!sex ever written, and Harry may or may not grow boobs, the author remained confused on this part. Harry gives birth and Snape takes one look at the newborn and falls Madly In Love. Harry decides he's not going back to Hogwarts anymore so he can "be a good mother" (did I mention he's like 15 at this point?). They name the baby something REALLY stupid and live happily ever after.

I really don't know why I kept reading. Train-wreck syndrome I guess.

Oh god. That sounds awful.

I don't like Snarry fics were it starts with Harry being in love with Snape. I see this especially in post-DH fics where Harry realizes that he's been in love with Snape all along and now it's okay to admit it since Snape is a hero now. It just seems so OOC for Harry.

I sometimes keep reading those types of fics too. Not the mediocre OOC ones, but the ones you believe can't possibly get any worse, just because they inevitably do, and it is amazing.

Oh god. I don't think I could stop reading that mess if I ever find it and I hope not to. Okay maybe I kinda wanna read that one a little bit actually.

There was this one series (I think it was a trilogy?) of SVU fic where Kathy Stabler dies, and Elliot, his kids, and Olivia all wind up going into witness protection together for reasons I don't remember. They have to pretend to be one big happy family with Olivia as the stepmom, and of course the kids are all very accepting of this even though they just lost their real mom (plus, you know, their identities). And naturally Elliot and Olivia fall in love and are eventually able to leave the program and be a family for real and I think it ends with them getting married and having twins (because all fics like that end with twins, as if he doesn't have enough kids already).

Basically it was a bunch of fluff, but it was cute fluff and I mostly enjoyed it.

I can't think of a specific fic. But for awhile I shipped a reasonably popular OTP. There was usually new fic posted every couple of days. Despite starving for a fix, I probably managed to read one fic a month without having to backspace out at the OOCness?

I'm really picky about credible characterization.

I've read several Remus/Hermione fanfics where Lupin has been turned into a raging, possessive, abusive monster and Hermione enables this behavior and submits to it because... werewolf, I guess? That's how they explain it but it never comes off as anything bad extremely OOC and very creepy. WTF, HP fandom, this is what you want to read? Buy Eclipse and read that.

I end up reading tons of OOC HP fanfic. It's like a sickness. I can't help it.

Many of these involve Molly who hates Harry or Hermione who has no redeeming qualities and also hates Harry. Or Harry being the descendant of both Jesus and Merlin and smarter than every adult who has ever lived. Or Ginny the evil slut who love potions Harry behind his back.

I think it's clear I have a problem. LOL

Well aside from My Immortal, maybe Our Little One? Famous for the "temporary uterus".

I once read a Supernatural high-school AU where Castiel angsted over his crush on Dean, while listening to his favorite musician, Taylor Swift. I think he was also goth or emo at the time? Self-labeled.

Now, okay, this could be comedy/parody gold. I could even maybe see Cas mention, in a deadpan, that he enjoys Taylor Swift, because he's the butt of the joke often enough in canon. I don't even dislike Taylor Swift's singing! The fic took itself completely seriously, though, and I just can't see it. It read more like the very young author self-inserting themselves and their tastes into Castiel's shoes.

IDK if I'd say it's the MOST EVER, but right now I'm reading an Avengers HS AU wherein Loki just moved to town and is hiding his (mpreg-begotten, though this is an otherwise realistic, non-powered universe) daughter from Thor, with whom he fell in love at first sight. And Thor fell in love with him at first sight too and they cry a lot together and cuddle and Loki says things like "I just don't want to lose you!" and Thor text LIEK THIS rn omg

Luca Blight/fem!Sasarai rapefic. Given his backstory I can't see Luca raping anyone.

A series of Snapefics in which Snape was portrayed as a fragile, weepy, pathetic creature in perpetual need of mothering by Dumbledore.

But the OOC-ness that finally made me backbutton in disgust was when the potions class went on a plant-collecting field trip and Neville Longbottom mistakenly gathered poison ivy.
