I'm sure its a bit like everyone in DA2 fandom writing Purple Hawke. It's dull, but only a problem if its wildly OOC.I think having a "one to save the world" dynamic with this type of character is fine, so long as they have measurable weaknesses when written in fic and it makes sense lore-wise.

The problem that arises in Elder Scrolls fic is that the game allows you to (in Skyrim) become guild master of five factions (possibly more with DLC), end a war, save the world twice, become a noble in nine separate holds, meet someone and get married, sell your soul to more than a dozen dieties, and go on hundreds of minor quests all in the space of about a month in-game time. This works (barely) in-game because travel time is cut short, you don't have to sleep or eat, and everyone else in the world is apparently a fucking moron.

It doesn't work in fanfic unless its a parody. If you want your thieves' guild master to also be the Listener you'd better have a damn good reason why Astrid/Mercer let you join their guild when you were already a member of a partner/rival guild. Likewise your squishy mageling isn't going to be winning a spot in the companions and your no-magic Nord isn't going to be named Archmage.

hhhhoohmg I just have a lot of feelings about this

I haven't played Skyrim yet but I can definitely see how that one would be a problem.

As for Purple Hawke, I don't really find him/her in fic much, Blue seems more prevalent and since I love Blue, fandom life is good. (It is Blue, right? The mouthy/snarky Hawke?)

TES is my second fav game series of all time (after the Legacy of Kain) and the lore is SO FUCKING INCREDIBLE (seriously, I think it probably surpasses Tolkien's works in scope) that it seriously disappoints me how small the fic and art producing side of the fandom is.

Nope, Purple Hawke is snarky Hawke. Blue is "Good" Hawke and Red is Aggro Hawke.

I've been intending to play it, since I've heard many good things about it. But I think I may have to give fandom a pass.

Uh, well ... disregard what I said entirely! Purple Hawke definitely seems the most prevalent but again, I like him/her quite a bit. The impression I get is that Paragon Shep is a bit on the dull side (I haven't gotten far with my version of him/her though).

Written badly, Paragon Shepard can be incredibly boring, just like Renegade Shepard can be tooth-grindingly "edgy" and violent - bad writers tend to default to Lawful Boring and Chaotic Stupid.

Written well (and in canon, after you get through the intro slog, which can honestly be boring on replay regardless of which path Shepard you're playing), Paragon Shepard can be just as snarky and interesting as Renegade Shepard, and still makes some incredibly brutal decisions, because someone has to make them and the alternative is worse.

With TES most of the fandom creativity seems to go into making mods for the three main games on PC, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim. The talent there is just incredible.

I know players of Skyrim, or Elder Scrolls who stick to one or two guilds at most with a character. Often they will roll a different character to check out the different guilds, and their fics reflect that.

I look at the game as open-ended, with possibilitis. Sure I might do a complete playthrough with a character just to have fun with the game, but in fic that character is limited to one or two guilds at most, maybe leader of one, having left another guild some time before, etc.
