He was assigned to that remote outpost because he insisted on trying his planet to planet teleportation. With Admiral Archer's prized beagle, and he'll let you know of the dog is okay just as soon as he finds it again.

Yes, this. I got into an argument once with someone who thought that his reassigning to the ass end of nowhere was incredibly unfair, when I thought it was far too lenient for killing somebody's dog.

Although I hear in the novelization the dog shows up at the end, alive and well.

Maybe when I was in fandom I just happened to luck out but whenever Scotty or Archer were mentioned in a fic this was always brought up.

Unless you're hoping for it to come back up in the movie? I doubt it will. It was honestly a throwaway line to justify Scotty's presence on some conveniently close to Vulcan backwater planet.

As far as my feelings on it? What he did was wrong, yes. Did he pay his time for his crime? If so, then I don't think he should be punished again. If it's brought up again I think it should be from other characters questioning his ethics but... probably not too seriously? Because he did do his time and, come on, it's Scotty. Deep moral dilemmas are generally not why we go to that character. I'm not saying you can't but in general... that's not his role. Especially not in the reboot movies.

It's hard for me to take that line that seriously cause it seems like it's only there as an almost goading reference to Enterprise (like yeah, we'll acknowledge that canon, while we're throwing it out of an airlock). But I do hope the dog came out on the other side somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake, the dog turned up fine, just a long while later. It was in the dialog of the movie I watched.

"In the 2009 Star Trek film, it is implied that "Admiral Archer's" prized Beagle was involved in a freak accident when Montgomery Scott used him as a test subject for a transporter experiment. Porthos, however, would have been over 70 years old when Scott was born, therefore it is not at all certain whether or not the beagle in question was Porthos, although it is possible that it has been made possible for dogs to live longer by that time; it's also possible that Archer only kept beagles for pets. The novelization of the film has the beagle transported onto the Enterprise."

TLDR; Novelization from source is canon.

although it's not addressed, the dog does come back in the comics, which are considered canon as they're overseen by Bob Orci himself.

I'm sure the Dog turned out fine. ...because I can't believe in a universe where Porthos III doesn't live. I call the dog Porthos the Third, grandson/granddaughter of the original Porthos.

oh my god, you must be the most obnoxious person in the immediate vicinity. Lighten the fuck up.

Anyway, the dog didn't die, it walks off the transporter pad at the end of the novelization. So you'll have to find something else to >:c about. I suggest all the tribbles who died in that avalanche on Kirk during TOS.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because life should be nothing but eternal punishment and "call outs" for every bad thing you've ever done, and nobody should ever be forgiven, ever, because clearly they're just irredeemable.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It was Archer from Enterprise's dog. That counts as a mercy killing.

The beagle had a little red doggie coat on too, own fault.

HE DIDN'T KILL THE DOG

[personal profile] thaurfea 2013-02-22 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
He did not. Kill. THE DOG.

In the novelization, the dog shows up at the end, randomly rematerializing in Engineering aboard the Enterprise.

The dog is fine. Everyone can give it a rest now.
