Re: Non-fandom secrets
(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)I'm mentally ill and I can't stand when fiction takes on non-psycho or sociopathic mental illness, particularly hospitalization, because it's either too spot-on and realistic, or it's offensive and supports society's view of MI. Both the portrayal (most often by non-MI people) of either type and the reactions of non-MI people to either type just leads me to feel horribly alienated at best (even sympathy to a good portrayal does this, I have a whiplash "don't you dare pity me" reflex) or triggered (yes, actually triggered) at worst.
I want there to be portrayals of MI out there. I just have never found one that didn't make me immensely uncomfortable at best.
Re: Non-fandom secrets
(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 01:44 am (UTC)(link)I hate it when portrayals of any marginalized group are really sad and "look at how horrible it is to be this person". I get they're trying to make a point it's just not a lesson that I need to learn.
Re: Non-fandom secrets
(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 02:01 am (UTC)(link)I mean, I agree with both of you that the pitiable portrayals of marginalized groups tends to piss the marginalized groups off more often than not (and the members of said groups have every right to be pissed off at such portrayals), but when there are still people out there who are nothing but assholes to the mentally ill because they think it's fake and done for attention...well, then some anvils need to be dropped. I don't know if it's effective or not, but I like to think it is, because it makes me rage a little less.
Re: Non-fandom secrets
(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 02:11 am (UTC)(link)Oh, I know. I get the point of it. I just wish there were more stories for me, that showed people like me having more to them than "the very special episode where we all feel bad about this tragic thing before going back to singing/crime-solving/drama next week." And honestly I think that might be more effective, too.
Re: Non-fandom secrets
Abed Nadir is the only mentally ill/neuroatypical character in media I have ever been able to empathize with without either cringing or being caused emotional pain.
So far season 4 is a bit. . .different but I suggest you check the first three seasons out. Really resonates with me.
