Re: Internet stalking

Not stalking to the point of finding out real names/addresses, but I'll read tumblrs/twitters/etc of obnoxious people for long periods of time... like as entertainment? I feel bad, like this is "stalking," but if they're publishing deep personal secrets on tumblr, where they can't be friends-locked, they don't exactly value their privacy, you know?

Like this one formerly prolific artist from my fandom. She's really really good but she straight up quit drawing and posts all this angry social justice stuff nowadays. It's amusing to me to watch her fritter her life away. So much wasted potential. She even ranted about people's comments on "wasted potential."

My ex is the almost the same. Really talented, doesn't apply herself, sits around all day playing MMORPGs and every few months posts with "Gonna draw all the new things and make that comic!!" and she'll come back in 2 weeks with another headshot of the same character type she's been drawing for 3 years. Yeah ok, keep reaching for that dream. Of being a top ranked gamer.

I know I need a life, but I like my schadenfreude when I'm not at work. :P

Reading someone's public Tumblr/Twitter isn't really in the same category imo. That shit's there for people to read it. *shrug*

Other stuff is "there for people to read it," provided the OP isn't outright hacking into private posts. That's why internet privacy advice goes along the lines of 'if you don't want anyone to see it, don't put it out there in the first place.' Deliberate search for that old info or it happens to come up in an unrelated search or you're just reading backlogs of a forum-- same difference. Same end result.

I disagree with the idea that info you have to dig to find is "there for people to read it". When you construct a profile, you are making it clear that you WANT people to know the information you put there (that includes when you deliberately post links to other sites where you have a profile or sites that you own/run). When you have to dig around, Google people, and follow crumb trails to find information about someone, it's safe to assume they did not want you to find it. There's courtesy and respect for privacy there.
