Internet stalking

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else like doing it?

I used to "stalk" people on forums I posted at - I would use clues from their posts about where they lived, what their name was until I could find them elsewhere on the internet (yes, I had a lot of spare time and I was bored). I didn't do anything creepy and they never knew. It was fun in the same way as solving a puzzle.

I haven't had the opportunity to do this in a while, until I joined an online dating site. I tried to stalk someone who I found hot, but I didn't get too far. I did find some sexy pictures they'd posted on a forum, and their full name, and some artwork, but unfortunately they have a common surname and a REALLY common first name which is a pain when it comes to finding someone's facebook, address, relatives, etc. Bah, common names.

Mostly, I'm just wondering if anyone else gets the fun in putting together all the little facts people give away about themselves under their fake names and finding out who they really are without them ever knowing it.

No, I respect people's privacy.

If they wanted their privacy, they shouldn't be putting their info on the internet.

Re: Internet stalking

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I use FB too. But if the person doesn't know who I am, they probably wouldn't add me. So I have to add their friends with my fake accounts and hope that their photos and posts are set to "friends of friends."

But if they actually add me (my real account) and I become their friend, I usually lose interest in "stalking" them because all their stuff is right there. It's not like I do it because I'm obsessed with them - I just like the challenge of looking for things.

I try not to but it's a powerful temptation sometimes.

There was, one time when I was in college, someone made a website that was really fucking stupid, and me and a friend tracked down who had made it using the WHOIS info and some Internet detectivery, and then we texted him and called him an idiot for making such a dumb site. But I don't feel too guilty about that, truth be told.

It wouldn't be so creepy if you weren't talking about it the way you are. You can just say that someone put stuff online and you found it. But this is giving you some kind of power kick and it's really weird.

I don't stalk people because I am lazy, but I do enjoy looking up old classmates on FB to see how they are doing. Especially the mean ones.

Re: Internet stalking

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I've done this to a certain extent when curious about people for whatever reason, but the way you're putting it is really creepy.

The way I feel about it is just that I have a hard time picking up on social cues and making small talk, and being observant and good at putting things together is a coping mechanism. It's not a power trip and I'd never try and invade people'd privacy. I'm just trying to get on equal ground with everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
YES. I've done it to users I found talented, funny, or good-looking. I don't do anything crazy though, like go to their house and take a picture.

I don't actually care where anyone lives either. I just want more - more funny comments from them, more artwork, more pictures, etc. That's the only reason I do it. Otherwise I don't bother

I'm not going to lie, this creeps me out a bit. I try to keep my real name/identity as secret as possible when I'm connecting with strangers online (in places like this as opposed to say, Facebook) and once when I was in a chat room on a gaming site I frequent someone started researching me and found my real name and Facebook page. It creeped me out big time. He started using my real name in the chat even after I asked him not to. I eventually reported him for privacy invasion. I'm not even sure if that's a rule on that site but it seems to have worked since I haven't heard from him since.

Then I deleted most of the accounts I have that connect my real name to any of my online handles. I'm almost done purging all of them.

Sometimes, I think to myself: "Nonny, you are too paranoid. You should open up a facebook or whatever and get on with the times. No one cares about your real name being out there. Pretty much everybody does it."

Thanks for reminding me why I always have that creeping "but what if..." feeling.

You know, I do this a lot. It's funny, because I don't consider it stalking. More like... research? I like to learn about different types of people, what kinds of commonalities different groups have in members, what kinds of groups/media attract what kind of people.

I find it's actually a very useful tool, since I'm getting into a career type that relies heavily on building information resources about people. My hobby of internet-stalking has taught me what to look for, how to find different types of people.

Not stalking to the point of finding out real names/addresses, but I'll read tumblrs/twitters/etc of obnoxious people for long periods of time... like as entertainment? I feel bad, like this is "stalking," but if they're publishing deep personal secrets on tumblr, where they can't be friends-locked, they don't exactly value their privacy, you know?

Like this one formerly prolific artist from my fandom. She's really really good but she straight up quit drawing and posts all this angry social justice stuff nowadays. It's amusing to me to watch her fritter her life away. So much wasted potential. She even ranted about people's comments on "wasted potential."

My ex is the almost the same. Really talented, doesn't apply herself, sits around all day playing MMORPGs and every few months posts with "Gonna draw all the new things and make that comic!!" and she'll come back in 2 weeks with another headshot of the same character type she's been drawing for 3 years. Yeah ok, keep reaching for that dream. Of being a top ranked gamer.

I know I need a life, but I like my schadenfreude when I'm not at work. :P

So, thanks for validating my paranoia anon!

Are you L, by any chance? (If so, and if you're currently on the Kira case, get backup from Wammy house NOW.)

(If you have no idea what that was about, you should watch/read Death Note. I think you'd get a kick out of it.)

Tell me, what would you have done if this person had contacted you?

Because even if you don't have any creepy intentions when you do this, if they find out they're probably going to feel very creeped out regardless. I think it's because it disregards boundaries (I feel a little bit silly saying that, but anyway). People usually like to think they have some kind of control over which people know what things about them. You know those sexy pictures of the person you found hot? If they'd wanted people on the contact site to see them, they probably would have put them there. They didn't put them there, so they probably don't want users of the contact site to see them. If you didn't respect that boundary, why should they believe you'll respect other boundaries?

I don't mean to say you don't respect other boundaries. You probably do. But I don't find it strange at all that people get creeped out when they hear it, because you're describing acting in a way that tells people you can't be trusted, regardless if that's true or not.

Nope I don't, and personally I would not care if someone googled me, but that is because I'm not that big on privacy in my online life really...

I read peoples profiles if I've talked to them, and possibly go to different sites they are on if they link me, but I am lazy.

Re: Internet stalking

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No one's going to read this because I'm too late but.

I just want to say that I did exactly the same thing with some interesting people I frequented on a forum. I don't think it's creepy. It's not like I wanted to visit them or use the information for other shady doings. And if they put up so much about themselves on the net, you can't talk about invading someone's privacy. I was really bored when I started to "stalk" them and it was just a way to pass the time.
