I'm pretty sure how much you think has little to do with it, or even your age. For me, that sort of thing is generally my kink. Not something I think is good or right or would be desirable in real life, just hot because in fiction there isn't any baggage that needs to go along with it. No shame in asking/delivering it fiction as far as I'm concerned.

For what it's worth, I kind of regretted the wording of this secret quite quickly after submitting it. I was hoping it would just disappear in the list, not be right there on top. Oh well.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry OP, but I was distracted by Richard Armitage's face and had trouble reading your secret (dang it, I thought that after Return of the King, I was over that phase! Apparently not).

Regarding your secret; yes, pretty much. It's an overused trope, which, while it can be done well, sometimes very well, is often too OOC and so non-critical of dickheads that it pulls me out of the story.

Bad characterization is bad characterization, no matter your age.

This. Also, I've seen a good many fics in fandom where Thorin acts like a dickhead and Bilbo calls him out on it. Not saying there isn't a lot of the opposite, but...badfic exists everywhere, you just have to keep looking.

As for the forced marriage thing...of course it's popular and if it's not your cup of tea I can see getting annoyed with it, but it's just fantasy and doesn't necessarily say anything about the readers age or state of mind. If it's well written I'll read it.

(Pretty picture, btw. Mmm.)

It's a kink meme, and forced marriage is a kink.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, I'm 23 (of course, I don't know if that makes me young or old to you...) and I've always hated that characterization. I don't hang around the Hobbit kink meme, but it's always bugged me that I can't find much hetero romance that doesn't have the male character being an overbearing dick and that being something that's supposed to be attractive. I mean, it wouldn't bug me if it were there only occasionally and I could avoid it, but it's in like everything.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? Because I could have written this, right down to the age.

Can someone explain to me why forced marriage is a kink? Most kinks I understand even if I don't share them, but the point of this one continues to elude me.

As with anything, not everyone's mileage is the same, but I think the appeal of forced marriage is that it's a compelled scenario. The meeker character doesn't have to commit to wanting a relationship from a cold start. That kind of passivity in how a relationship begins is quite a common kink. (CF: 'The hotel mixed up the room bookings' right up to rape kink.)

Plus forced marriage is usually being imposed externally on both parties, so the more aggressive partner still isn't actually culpable for the scenario. (CF: Sex pollen; Aliens Made Them Do It.)

ot!!

I lurve forced marriage fics -- even more so if there's a soul-bond or magic-made-them-do-it added -- because I like the idea of two incompatible people being stuck together and having to find a way to make it work, because they can't get out of this relationship and they don't have any other choices. There's something about the give and take there that works for me emotionally in some weird way... maybe 'cause lots of other stories make it too easy on their characters and in most forced marriage fic they really have to work for their happily ever after?

For me it's not a kink, because the sexual part is not all that interesting to me in this scenario, but I find the relationship dynamics in such a scenario interesting (of course not for all pairings, really only for pairings and fandoms where a forced marriage makes sense, like A Song of Ice and Fire or similar fantasy/medieval settings). I just find it interesting to see how two people who are stuck with each other even though they don't want to can learn to accept and maybe even like each other. But I also don't see how it's a kink as such. It's just a scenario or a trope.

Well, it's inherently dub-con to non-con, which is in itself a prominent kink. Then, when both parties are forced into it, it is mutual dub- or non-con - which you don't find that often as a scenario. The power dynamics involved can be very interesting, psychologically. You have the kind of imbalance of power that forces them into it, as well as the internal dynamics which often favour one party over the other.

Basically, if you're interested in messed up power structures, forced marriage can be an interesting read.

It's easy to get tired of things when you see them all the time - you may just need a break from the kink meme.

I don't like that trope either OP. I can stand it sometimes, but once I've read a few of them in a row, I start cringing inside and have to stop.

Samesies! I'm looking at a lot of fic now and recognizing I probably would've dug it 10 years ago, but oh boy I sure don't now

Yeah, what the people above have said. I have never liked that kind of thing, no matter my age. The only way I can imagine it working for me is if both don't want it, end up becoming friends but not falling in love, and use their friendship to fuck over everyone that forced them to marry or whatever. Then maybe they divorce or something. I don't know.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
That pretty much sums up why I can't stand Thorin/Bilbo.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome to fandom's illogical obsession with 'tsundere' characters.

I just want my characters to give a shit about each other and show it sometimes. There's being 'grumpy/prickly' and aloof or having difficulty showing affection--and then there's the emotionally abusive 'tsundere' trope. Japanese and Western fandoms alike suffer from it and idgi.

Hm. Asking for something on a kinkmeme is not the same as thinking it's romantic, healthy, or something to aspire to. I like fucked up relationships in fiction. Romance bores me.

That said, characters acting OOC for the sake of a trope is always bad writing, no matter the trope.

I find that my taste for various tropes comes and goes. The thing I was big on two years ago, I'm just kinda eh on now and vice versa. I think it's a real mistake to ascribe it to maturity (or immaturity) or thoughtfulness (or lack thereof) that your tastes have changed. Just accept it and don't make too much of a fuss. It makes it a lot less embarrassing and upsetting if you discover your taste for it comes back somewhere down the line.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I actually don't mind so much if something's requested on a kink meme... stuff like dub/non-con are fairly common kinks, after all, and that's what a kink meme is FOR.

But the prevalence of this IRL media annoys the fuck out of me. ESPECIALLY in romance novels. Dear god, it is everywhere, and it pisses me off, because I actually LIKE romance, and all I want is something adorable and sexy.
And this stuff isn't warned for, like in fanfic. No, it's ASSUMED that the reader will find the asshole character sexy and romantic.

Fuck that shit.

You should probably be more disturbed by the fact that there exists a Hobbit kink meme and that you're reading it.

I mean really think about it for a second. "The Hobbit" kink meme.

I actually like these kind of fics because (quoting one other commenter) "I like the idea of two incompatible people being stuck together and having to find a way to make it work."
HOWEVER, I feel uncomfortable when this is portrayed in a very unrealistic manner. Like when it's abusive and borderline non-con and then the other goes like "K, I hated you 2 seconds ago but now I suddenly love you because you did this one good act". No, no, no and no.
So yes, I kind of get what you mean.
