Weird hair care question (maybe gross? dunno)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so, my hair is seriously pissing me off. Let me start at the top (ha ha hair joke).

I can't wash my hair every day, because if I do, my scalp flakes and itches like mad. So, I wash my hair every other morning. I don't blow dry but instead let it air dry (our apartment's electricity sucks and even if I did it, my hair is so thick it would take forrrreeeevvverrrrr to dry). I found that I can control some of the flakeage with a moisturizing shampoo, as dandruff shampoo barely made a dent in the issue.

I used to use a two-in-one Herbal Essence moisturizing shampoo/conditioner, but toward the end of my first day, the right-front part of my scalp would itch so bad that I'd actually accidentally scratch bloody furrows in my scalp (large scabs is not what you want to reach up and suddenly find). I'd also sometimes find large sheets of dead scalp skin hiding in my hair causing the itching. So, I tried two other brands, Pert Plus (something I used to use) and Fructis (or however it's spelled). Both are the same two-in-one and both are moisturizing.

Problem is, neither of them can keep my hair from not looking like I rolled around in fry oil at the midway point of the second day, while the Herbal Essences could. What's worse, apparently the Pert Plus also encourages my scalp to spontaneously erupt in small sores by the end of said second day. So, when I'm not dealing with the fact that I look just fine the second day morning but look like rancid gross by noon AND getting a lovely helping of sores, I end up scratching the skin off my head. It's not like I can go home on my lunch break and take a shower (even if that would fix it, I work 30-45 minutes from home), and the sores freak me out (they aren't bad or huge, but they do bleed and come out of nowhere). I can't wash my hair every morning because then I'm snowing on my shoulders.

I have never had this issue before in my entire life, so I don't know what to do! And I don't want to go ask someone in a salon cause I feel like I'll just be told to buy some $40 bottle of shampoo that won't really help but will get them a sweet commission. Please, someone help me!

I think you should see a doctor or a dermatologist or something. This sounds highly suspect. Maybe you have allergies or need a prescription shampoo.

I've heard good things about the "no poo method" and even seen great results on people I know but I get that not everyone has the time to wait out weeks of gross looking hair.

possibly tmi about hair

not op

I am going shampoo free and boy, do I hope it works D: I heard that it takes like two months for the hair to look normal again (I'm finishing week 3). is it true? it will stop looking all greasy and stuff eventually, right?

I'm following the method someone suggested on a forum that goes: every day scratch your scalp to, er, loosen the oils/grease (there's no way to describe it that doesn't sound gross D:); brush your hair with a good bristled hair brush to distribute the oils well; wash as needed with water. the person who tried it said that it worked and that by week 9 or so it looked and smelled clean again. myself, I've seen some sort of back and forth kind of progress?? ah well

Seconding the suggestion to see a dermatologist. If you're suffering from psoriasis/eczema/allergies/etc that needs to be identified and treated first. Once you've gotten the sores under control, you can start examining how to keep your hair and scalp cleaner.

I only shampoo my hair once fortnightly, but I use conditioner to wash it everyday (I basically use it in place of shampoo - scrub and wash out immediately). The friction gets rid of any dirt buildup over the day and the conditioner leaves a nice scent without drying out my hair/scalp like using shampoo regularly does.

Occasionally, I'll do a rinse or scrub with natural products to keep dandruff at bay. Three of my favourites:

1) Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a cup of warm water; pour over your head and rub well into the scalp. This stops dandruff cold - it's been better for me than any anti-dandruff shampoo I've ever tried. If you have a problem with dandruff, it might take a few rinses, but you'll see the difference soon enough. Caveat: I don't like the smell, so I always do it on a day when I'm not going out!

2) Mix the juice of one lemon with conditioner; rub it into your scalp thoroughly and rinse it out. This removes buildup but is still gentle on the hair and scalp. Sometimes I use this in place of my fortnightly shampoo - it's very cleansing and my scalp always feels great afterwards. And my hair's so soft I keep petting it! =P

3) Mix a couple of spoons of brown sugar with conditioner; use it as a scrub on your scalp. This is self-explanatory, and if I ever feel like I'm getting an itch somewhere on my scalp, this is my go-to fix-it. It's also useful for when there are little spots of itchiness but you don't feel like treating your entire scalp. Just adjust the amounts of sugar and conditioner as required.

One other treatment I haven't tried myself but have heard good things about: getting a cup of whipped cream, beaten nice and fluffy, and massaging it into your scalp. Leave it for 5-10 minutes and then rinse it out well. Apparently this works wonders on dry/flaking scalps.

Hopefully one of these helps you, OP! Just to reiterate though, I think you should still see a dermatologist first, because the sores you're describing sound terrible; you might need medical intervention to help those heal before you try anything else.

I've had an itchy scalp my whole live. On the advise of a friend I started using shampoo without SLS, and that helped greatly.

It sounds to me like you have psoriasis or eczema, and if that's true, I don't think that what you're describing here will actually solve the problem.

I've had mild psoriasis (the itching, the flaking, the "sores" you describe) since I was a kid. Coal tar shampoo clears it up for me. Neutrogena T-Gel works really well to me.

The longer your scalp is damp, that promotes the growth of the yeast that causes psoriasis. So for example, if I go to sleep with wet hair or put wet hair up in a ponytail, I'll have a flare-up. The condition is better the shorter my hair is as well, I think because my hair dries faster and more of my scalp is exposed to sunlight. Exposure to sunlight is often really good for some skin conditions.
