I totally agree. Not too long ago, I read a fic where one of the main character's name was misspelled. I would have back-buttoned the fic but I thought it was otherwise pretty good so far and I figured the author would realize her mistake. It took three chapters and a passel of gushy reviews before one person (tentatively) pointed out the misspelled name. The author replied that her spell check automatically changes the name and she wasn't going to change it back because changing the spelling in the middle would ruin the "continuity". Frankly, I found the consistently misspelled name a lot more jarring than any correction. I couldn't stand the arrogant laziness of the author, so I ditched the fic.

Doesn't anyone proofread or use betas anymore?

Well, proofreading may not help, since you've written the stuff yourself; betas aren't always available.

That being said, I find the behaviour of the writer in question dickish, and you were right to quit reading the story.

Wow, that's just... obnoxious. If there's an obvious error in something, shouldn't the logical reaction be to try and fix it?

I came across another of these fics recently (the misspelled character only appeared a couple of chapters in, so there was no early warning either) and I ended up mentally flinching every time that name turned up. So yes, I'd very much prefer the missing "continuity" as well.

Funny, manga translators don't seem to care about "continuity" when it comes to corrected/changed character names... (off the top of my head: "Zoro" being changed to "Zolo" to avoid a lawsuit, and "Rabi" being changed to "Lavi" once there was an official spelling from the mangaka).
