No, this is a good reason to get judgemental. Suggests the fan might not even be an actual proper fan of the source material if they didn't even bother to learn their subjects names.

Misspelling characters' names=instant back-button for me.

...Although IDK. Once I've read a gorgeous canon!Holmes fic on AO3, and it had Watson named Jack. It was still good, though. I left kudos.

I can't count the number of times I've had to hit the back button because someone wrote about Lilly Evans. LILY. One L. How hard is that.

This used to happen in HP fandom all the time--Hermoine, Luscious, Voldermort...We can be bad and judgmental together, OP.

Judge away. Little things like that are excellent predictors of quality. If the author can't be arsed to even check the character's name, the likelihood that the fic is worth reading is pretty much zero.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It drives me crazy too -- but I still misspell "separate" on the first try almost every single time I use it. (Got it this time, natch.) "Resistance" is about fifty-fifty. (Got it wrong this time.) If it weren't for spellcheck there'd be seperates and resistences all over the place. I got "Tolkien" wrong the other day because I second-guessed myself. Many people seem to have a few isolated words they just cannot for the life of them remember how to spell -- usually involving a wrong vowel or some silent letters that are/aren't supposed to be there. It's probably inevitable that some people end up chronically unable to spell character names. I try not to be judgmental.

Gah, this drives me nuts too. I've seen people spell the names of TITLE CHARACTERS wrong.

Phineas. His name is in the title, and it's probably on the same page you're submitting your fic to as well.

It especially bugs me in fandoms that are most well known as written series (books, comics, etc). It's written RIGHT THERE for you!

The ONE exception is when it's someone from another country and they spell the names differently in the versions released in that country.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that depeds. What if you're in a foreign language fandom and there is no one official way to write a character's name?

That shit happens a lot in Japanese-media based fandoms.

I am so scared of doing that, my fandom has some names that are odd and hard to remember the spelling of. Fortunately I have a ton of official stuff with the names saved on my computer for easy look up.

But yeah, looking up stuff isn't that hard.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. Not too long ago, I read a fic where one of the main character's name was misspelled. I would have back-buttoned the fic but I thought it was otherwise pretty good so far and I figured the author would realize her mistake. It took three chapters and a passel of gushy reviews before one person (tentatively) pointed out the misspelled name. The author replied that her spell check automatically changes the name and she wasn't going to change it back because changing the spelling in the middle would ruin the "continuity". Frankly, I found the consistently misspelled name a lot more jarring than any correction. I couldn't stand the arrogant laziness of the author, so I ditched the fic.

Doesn't anyone proofread or use betas anymore?

The ASOIAF fandom is the worst with this. Half the people don't know how to spell Daenerys, the other half writes Jamie instead of Jaime, there are various misspellings of Cersei, people who spell Jon as John ... it never stops.

I'm probably one of those people sometimes. :( Sometimes, for some reason, I just get it in my head that a name is spelled one way when it's actually spelled another. (I especially have this problem with Pokémon - Dialga and Ninetales, I'm looking at you.) For me, it's not a matter of laziness so much as it not even occurring to me that I might have the spelling wrong. I mean, I read it so many times; how could I have it wrong? And yet, I do get it wrong. idk

(Anonymous) 2013-02-23 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This so much!

Particularly when it's characters from a BOOK. How can you read the same name again and again and still spell it wrong?!

I can actively say that this is one of the few things that can make me actually judge a person and hit the Back button. I'm sure looking up character names in MSN or Google or Yahoo! takes only ten seconds, so what's with the names, Mr/Ms Fanfic Writer?

If you are a non-native writer, then I apologize.

It's a long, long series with hundreds of minor and supporting characters, so I understand Wheel of Time fans making the odd mistake. But I do get a ragetwitch in my eye if I see 'Matt' instead of 'Mat'.

(I just don't understand how someone can put in the full-on weeks of reading-hours that completing WoT takes...and still not know how to spell the name of one of its main characters.)

Yep, nope, sounds like valid criteria to me.

If you can't be bothered to spell a character's name right, when you could easily look it up--and also, should know the fandom if you're writing for it!--then I don't think I can be bothered to read.

'Lilly' Evans/Potter is the one that really supremely bugs me, though. Although any misspelling in a book-based fandom is pretty bad, and I just pray that anyone spelling her name with two ls is a movies-only fan.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
My favourite instance of this was someone who decided that the correct spelling of the name of her fandom's creator (not a character, I reiterate, the actual writer who made the canon) wasn't stylish enough and decided to intentionally spell it with a Y in place of an I, and said as much.

This happens frequently with both sides of my otp in fic and other fanworks (even in the tumblr tags).

I'm more surprised when people get their names right than when they don't.
