This is a big pet peeve of mine. Especially with the availability of sites like IMDB and Wikipedia.

I remember a few years ago, I read a fic where the author was joking in the author's notes about how they didn't know how to spell one of the characters' names...and then proceeded to spell the name a different way every time it showed up in the fic. I don't think they were trolling, either.
