IMO, different romanizations (and/or localizations) aren't in the same category as actually misspelled names. I'd accept Jounouchi, Jonochi, or Joey (begrudgingly), but not...idk "Jonuchi" or something. Not even having the decency to use an acceptable spelling or localization just tells me the author doesn't actually care that much about the quality of their work, and that's not something I'm going to be able to read.

The ones who get pissy about variations in spellings for names in Japanese often just don't understand how goddamn difficult it can be to accurately romanize certain phonetics from Japanese to English. Hell, "Wolfwood" in Trigun was pronounced something like "Uruhudo" in Japanese - try getting that one right!

IA.

There are different romanizations systems and using any of them is ok, even if it isn't the most common one.
Localized names? Also ok.
Weird official spellings (like Togashi's official spellings in HxH: Quwrof Wrlccywrlir, Chzzck, Phalcnothdk, etc.)? Sure, still ok.

None of them can be called misspells, since they all are technically right.

Gneh...this reminds me of years back when I was tangentially into Dragonball fandom.

If I had a dime for every time I saw someone spell Goku's name as Goukou...
