Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon

While I agree that Dukat posing as a Bajoran is repellent, I don't see how it's insulting to the audience? Dukat has passed the Moral Event Horizon. And probably also the Sanity Event Horizon. He's always had a very creepy Thing about Bajor and Bajorans.

On most shows, with most villains, I'd agree. But because for seasons 1-5 and most of 6*, every single character had been treated with such an exquisite amount of ambiguity, season 7 is mostly just bad in comparison to previous seasons. Why BOTHER pushing Dukat over the moral/sanity brink and making him a purely "black" villain when he's so much more interesting when he's morally grey?

When a lot of the appeal of the series is that ambiguity, yes, I consider Dukat's melodramatic transformation insulting to loyal viewers. Why go for "kill all the Bajorans" when "work with the Dominion to regain Cardassian (read: personal) control of Bajor" is so much more nuanced and in line with his established characterization?

*I've written here before that I attribute a lot of DS9's decline to Robert Hewitte Wolfe leaving after season 5; but because it's such an arc-based show, there's enough solid material for season 6 to continue along lines established in the earlier seasons.
