Yup, that's pretty much how it went.

Your explanation for the Episode That Must Not Be Named makes more sense to me than any canon explanation ever could.

Yup. He wakes up, goes, "Well, that was fucking weird", and has trouble making eye contact with Janeway for the next week. The end.

Not to mention the fact that he'll never be able to look at lizards the same way again.
