you dont have to play a video game to know what happens, the choices, the characters, the plot, etc. while i definitely agree the experience can be/arguably is often different, actually holding the controller doesn't determine whether or not you understand what's happening in a game. i know the experience isn't your "own" if you're watching someone else's individual experience, particularly with sandbox games or what have you, but you can definitely still be in a fandom for it.

eta: i wanted to add that, as someone in a few vg fandoms, i know a lot of people who belong to them who don't really know what they're talking about. like there's the portal fandom, and then there's the wheatley fandom, and some of the wheatley fandom loves to talk about stephen merchant's ~sexy voice or whatever, but then you can tell they don't much care about the story aspect because they think wheatley is dead or something.

so i mean i can see where the lack of personal experience in a game would cause a discrepancy in knowledge that may annoy other people in the fandom, but if you're watching an LP that goes through the whole game, then most of that shit gets cleared up. and there are people who perpetually seem to not know what's going on in the very things they're a "fan" of, like people thinking aranea and mindfang are the exact same homestuck characters. people like that may be clueless to some extent but that doesn't mean there's some sore of unwritten rule prohibiting them from being in the fandom.
